The Canadiens will not extend Shinkaruk a qualifying offer, which means he'll become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Shinkaruk has failed to make any sort of meaningful impact at the highest level since being selected by Vancouver with the 24th overall pick of the 2013 draft. The 24-year-old winger has only notched four points in 15 NHL appearances since turning pro in 2014-15, and just had what was probably his worst season yet, picking up a meager 10 points in 54 appearances with AHL Laval. He'll hope to catch on with another organization, but at this point it wouldn't be surprising to see him head overseas to continue his career.

After an impressive preseason with the Canucks in 2013-2014, Shinkaruk was sent back to the WHL for another year with the Medicine Hat Tigers. He wasn’t able to take a dramatic step forward in his development, however, as the 19-year-old put up five goals and 16 points in 18 games before suffering a season-ending hip injury that required surgery. Now healthy, he’ll receive the chance to challenge for a roster spot with the Canucks this upcoming season. Shinkaruk possess tremendous skill and it will only be a matter of time before he becomes a household name in fantasy hockey. Still, patience is a virtue, as Vancouver’s top-six is too crowded right now for him to make an immediate impact. But he's a must-own in dynasty formats -- his time will come soon enough.
The Canucks grabbed Shinkaruk with the 24th overall pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Originally expected to be selected in the top half of the first round, Shinkaruk apparently fell due to concerns about his size (5-11, 175). While Shinkaruk may not have prototypical size, he plays with unlimited energy while possessing top notch offensive skills and decent skating. The 18-year-old center was dominant in his past two seasons at the WHL level, totaling 177 points (86 goals, 91 assists) in 130 games. While the potential is there for Shinkaruk to develop into a top-six forward at the NHL level, he will need to bulk up and learn how to unleash his offensive arsenal against tougher competition before getting a long look from the Canucks. But he may just be one of the steals of the draft in a few years.
