After ranking below teammate Cameron Heyward as an IDP for years, Tuitt has closed that gap. In his last 1,060 snaps, Tuitt has 67 tackles with 14.5 sacks, and last year he was on pace for about 830 snaps over 16 games. That production rate applied to that snap count projects for about 50 tackles and 11.5 sacks, meaning few defensive linemen have been as productive as Tuitt in recent years. His problem is staying healthy — Tuitt hasn't played 16 games since his 2014 rookie season. With a little luck in the health department, Tuitt could have a big year.
A pectoral injury ended Tuitt's 2019 season after just six games, raising questions about his durability. He hasn't played a full 16 games since his rookie season and has missed 16 games over the past three seasons. There is no doubt he is a key contributor when on the field -- he was on pace for a career-best nine sacks before the injury -- but his health concerns hamper his IDP utility.
Tuitt rebounded nicely last season after an awful 2017 campaign, but again missed time due to injury. With little-to-know competition to supplant him as a starter he'll get plenty of snaps this season, although it may not result in significant fantasy points and may only have IDP value in deep leagues.
Back issues forced Tuitt to miss four games last season and, as a result, he recorded his fewest tackles (25) and sacks (three) since his rookie season. Still, he was an integral part of a much-improved pass defense and so long as he is healthy, Tuitt should put up respectable fantasy totals.
Tuitt was known as a boom-or-bust prospect when Pittsburgh selected him in the second round of the 2014 draft, and he's yet to conclusively take up either end of the spectrum. There have been flashes of brilliance, especially in 2015 when he totaled 54 tackles and 6.5 sacks, but he endured a down year in 2016. Playing through knee troubles might have contributed to that, though, and given that he just turned 24, there's more upside to project yet. An offseason hand surgery should not be an issue for Tuitt by the time training camp starts.
Tuitt began 2015 as the less-heralded player between himself and teammate Cameron Heyward, but throughout the year he demonstrated superior IDP upside. Although he missed two games with a knee issue, Tuitt logged 872 snaps and finished with 6.5 sacks at just 22 years old, meaning he should develop further after turning 23 in May. At 6-foot-6, 303 pounds, Tuitt is a standout athlete for someone of his build, and if he takes the next step forward in 2016 he should emerge as a solid DL2 option in most formats.
Tuitt struggled in his first season, but started the final four games for the Steelers. He is slated to return as the starting left end.
Tuitt's collegiate career was inconsistent, and he still has much to learn, but he has extraordinary athleticism and flexibility for someone his size.
