2024 Fantasy Outlook
Penix was the surprise pick of this year’s draft. Not necessarily because he went in the top 10, but because it was the Falcons who drafted him eighth overall. Atlanta signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal with $100 million guaranteed in March, which means Penix is headed to the bench. The left-hander has a cannon for an arm, the strongest in this year’s draft, and is an accurate downfield passer who also consistently hits tight windows. While the 6-2 Penix is skilled at working through progressions, he at times was inaccurate on intermediate targets because he threw a beat late and lacked touch. The biggest knock, though, is his medical history -- season-ending injuries to both shoulders and two ACL tears in his right knee at Indiana before transferring to Washington. Despite the injuries, he’s still “functionally mobile” and was sacked just 32 times on more than 1,700 dropbacks. At Washington, he led the nation in passing yards per game each of the last two seasons. In Atlanta, he’s the backup, but the 36-year-old Cousins is coming off a midseason Achilles injury and, unlike Penix, doesn’t have a great arm. If Penix gets a shot, he’ll have quality weapons in RB Bijan Robinson, WR Drake London and TE Kyle Pitts. Stay Tuned. Read Past Outlooks

Eclipses 300-yard mark in loss
Penix completed 21 of 38 passes for 312 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and rushed once for a five-yard touchdown in the Falcons' 44-38 overtime loss to the Panthers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The rookie signal-caller did his best to try to get the win the Falcons needed to remain in play for a playoff spot, a matter that was rendered moot when the Buccaneers were able to squeak past the Saints in a game being played concurrently. It was still an encouraging showing for Penix, however, who eclipsed the 300-yard mark and threw multiple touchdown passes for the first time as a pro. Penix connected with Drake London from 20 and 21 yards out for his pair of scoring tosses, but he never had a chance to possess the ball in overtime since the Panthers drove down for a game-winning touchdown. Penix got some invaluable experience over the final three games of the regular season and is indisputably entrenched as the Falcons' quarterback heading into the offseason.

Gets vote of confidence
Penix, who will start Sunday's game against the Giants, received verbal support from fellow signal-caller Kirk Cousins following his promotion, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Cousins, who found out Tuesday he was being benched after throwing his ninth interception over five games in a Week 15 win over the Raiders, didn't waste any time reaching out to Penix. After he got the news from head coach Raheem Morris that the rookie would be taking over the reins of the offense in Week 16, Cousins placed a call to Penix "just to let know I'd be in his corner and supporting him and trying to help him any way I can." Penix is already fully immersed in the task of Week 16 prep, having taken all 72 offensive snaps in Wednesday's walk-through practice.
