2024 Fantasy Outlook
Schoonmaker was able to play only eight games as a rookie after being selected in the second round of the 2023 Draft, and he's already running the risk of getting stuck with the injury-prone label. A partial tear of his plantar fascia hampered him last offseason, he underwent shoulder surgery in March, and he was unable to return during OTAs due to a hamstring strain. Jake Ferguson established himself as the Cowboys' starting tight end last year, and even if Schoonmaker is able to stay healthy in 2024, he could have trouble carving out a significant role. Read Past Outlooks
No targets in Week 7 loss
Schoonmaker didn't draw a target while playing 21 of the Cowboys' 69 snaps on offense in Sunday's 47-9 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Quarterbacks Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush dropped back 48 times and spread the ball around to seven different pass catchers in the blowout loss, but Schoonmaker didn't get a look even while top tight end Jake Ferguson (46 snaps) saw less playing time than usual. While filing in for an injured Ferguson in a Week 2 loss to the Saints, Schoonmaker recorded six catches for 43 yards, but he's been limited to two receptions for 13 yards on four targets over the subsequent four contests since Ferguson rejoined the lineup.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft as the fifth tight end taken in what was seen as a very deep class at the position, Schoonmaker has the size (6-5, 251) and athleticism to be a solid blocker on the line while contributing as a receiver at the sticks. That's the template the Cowboys have been using at the position ever since Jason Witten left, and while Dalton Schultz's departure this offseason does open up the starting spot, Schoonmaker will have to beat out second-year player Jake Ferguson, who offers similar size and has shown some chemistry in the passing game with Dak Prescott, for the job.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could top Week 2 depth chart
Schoonmaker could be the top tight end for the Cowboys in Week 2 against the Saints, as Jake Ferguson worked off to the side with the rehab group Thursday, per Ed Werder of Channel 8 Dallas, marking Ferguson's second consecutive absence from practice due to a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
Ferguson has yet to be officially ruled out, but things seem to be trending that way as he manages a bone bruise and MCL sprain sustained in the season opener against the Browns. Schoonmaker would presumably top the depth chart if Ferguson sits given Schoonmaker's status as a 2023 second-round draft pick, though the Cowboys also have rookie undrafted free-agent signing Brevyn Spann-Ford and John Stephens, who has a hamstring injury and has yet to play in an NFL game.
