Gets only six carries
RBWashington Commanders
December 2, 2024
McNichols took six carries for 32 yards in a 42-19 win over the Titans on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
McNichols didn't benefit much from Austin Ekeler's absence due to a concussion, with Brian Robinson getting most of the backfield touches early in the game and Chris Rodriguez then taking 11 carries during the fourth quarter. McNichols played 25 percent of snaps, well behind Robinson (47 percent) and slightly behind Rodriguez (28 percent), although the latter mostly played in the fourth quarter of a blowout. Ekeler will miss at least three more games after Washington's Week 14 bye, but any considerable fantasy value for McNichols might also require Robinson missing time.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
McNichols appeared destined to be mostly a special teams role player after three seasons as a professional. However, in 2020, he managed a career-high 271 offensive snaps which translated to 47 rushing attempts, 12 receptions and 259 total yards as Derrick Henry's primary backup. Heading into 2021, McNichols may find it difficult to maintain that role. The Titans invested a third-round pick in Darrynton Evans in the 2020 draft, though he was sidelined by various injuries for much of his rookie season. The team also added Brian Hill as a free agent in the offseason. Both moves will likely shift McNichols back to primarily a special teams role and without much fantasy upside in sight.
A fifth-round pick by the Buccaneers in the 2017 draft, McNichols has already proven to be a journeyman just two years into his career. His profile is highlighted by strong size-adjusted athleticism, as he pairs a 79th percentile BMI with 4.49 40-yard speed. That combination helped him turn in impressive college production, highlighted by a massive sophomore season in which he compiled 1,337 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. He also proved to be an effective receiver at the college level, racking up 66 receptions for 615 yards and seven scores across his two seasons Boise State. After joining the Titans' organization as a member of the practice squad late in the 2018 season, McNichols has a chance to latch on as the fourth running back on the team's depth chart entering 2019. Though he's only received two NFL carries, he could be a natural fit to fill in Dion Lewis' role as a satellite back if Lewis were to be sidelined for any significant amount of time.
McNichols spent the majority of the 2017 season on the 49ers' practice squad after getting cut by Tampa Bay in the preseason, though he didn't record a snap in the four games he spent on the 53-man roster at the end of the season. The 5-foot-9 back showed up to camp this year in better shape, but he is still has a tough hill to climb before making the 53-man roster, with a slew of other hungry running backs competing for backup spots behind Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida.
McNichols' surprise draft free fall looked like a steal for the Bucs in the fifth round, as the former Boise State standout boasted first-round worthy numbers. The 21-year-old compiled 3,205 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns in just three college seasons, impressively complementing those totals with 103 receptions for 1,089 yards and 11 additional scores through the air. McNichols also brings a solid track record as a blocker and is expected to be fully recovered from his post-Combine shoulder surgery by training camp. Alas, McNichols didn't make the cut, thus halting for now any talk that he might be a fantasy sleeper out of the gate.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set to back up Robinson
RBWashington Commanders
November 29, 2024
McNichols is set to serve as the Commanders' No. 2 running back in Sunday's game against the Titans after Austin Ekeler was ruled out due to a concussion, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McNichols has already been effective in the wake of absences in the Commanders' backfield this season, generating three tallies of more than 40 rushing yards, including a season-best 68-yard, two-touchdown effort against the Cardinals in Week 4. The veteran could help fill Ekeler's role Sunday despite sparse usage as a pass catcher this season, as McNichols recorded 28 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown over 14 regular-season games with the team he'll face Sunday, the Titans, back in 2021.
