2024 Fantasy Outlook
A fourth-round pick in 2022, Spiller saw a significant workload in only one game last season, turning 16 carries into 50 yards against the Raiders in Week 15. The Texas A&M product showed good balance and elusiveness in college, but he's gotten little chance so far in the NFL to show those traits. New Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman could find a role for him, but he brought Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins with him from the Ravens, which might not leave much work for anyone else in the backfield. Read Past Outlooks

Let go from Bolts' practice squad
The Chargers cut Spiller from their practice squad Friday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Spiller was added to the Chargers' practice squad Wednesday after he was unable to make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp. The 2022 fourth-round pick will now look to catch on with a team in need of backfield depth. Spiller had 37 carries for 96 yards and six catches for 34 yards across nine regular-season games for the Chargers in 2023.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
If Joshua Kelley is to be displaced from his spot on the Chargers' depth chart as the backup to Austin Ekeler, then Spiller seems the player to do it. The 2022 fourth-round pick was a major bust as a rookie, failing to put any heat on Kelley despite Kelley not doing much either. It's possible Spiller was held back by his youth -- he turns 22 on Aug. 9 -- and if so there might remain hope that he'll make quick progress in his second NFL training camp. Kelley is a low bar to clear, even if we concede it's concerning that Spiller couldn't displace him last year. The Chargers haven't invested much else in depth behind Ekeler, who dominates the high-value touches and mostly leaves his backups with carries between the tackles and far from the goal line.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could carve out pass-catching role
Spiller could see more involvement as a pass catcher in 2024 after fellow running back Austin Ekeler opted to leave the Chargers in free agency and agreed Monday with the Commanders on a two-year deal, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Ekeler tied for second on the team with 51 receptions in 2023, while his primary backup last season -- Joshua Kelley -- is a free agent. The Chargers brought in Gus Edwards in free agency, but Edwards has just 30 catches over 69 career NFL regular-season games and will likely be ticketed for the early-down work that Ekeler and Kelley and shared. The cap-strapped Chargers are unlikely to dip back into the free-agent market at running back, though they could bolster their backfield during the 2024 NFL Draft. In the meantime, however, Spiller profiles as the top candidate to handle passing-down work. He's demonstrated good hands, albeit on a small sample size, catching all nine of his targets for 47 yards since the Chargers selected him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
