2024 Fantasy Outlook
There are two major question marks surrounding Hockenson heading into the 2024 season. The first is health, with the 27-year-old in danger of missing the early part of the season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee Dec. 26. Hockenson underwent surgery in late January, and even an optimistic nine-month recovery timetable wouldn't have him ready for Week 1. It will presumably take even longer to get back to his impressive pre-injury production, especially given the other cloud hanging over Hockenson's fantasy forecast: the questionable efficacy of new Vikings QB Sam Darnold. Prior to the injury last year, Hockenson was having his best fantasy season yet, and even after a pair of missed games he finished second among tight ends in targets (127) and catches (95) and fourth in yards (960). That production included 42 catches for 482 yards and two TDs in seven games after Cousins tore his Achilles tendon Week 8, with Hockenson continuing to shine in an offense that still had plenty of passing volume but lesser efficiency. Unfortunately, we may not see that version of him again until late 2024 or even 2025. Read Past Outlooks
Struggles with eight targets
Hockenson had two receptions on eight targets for nine yards in Sunday's 31-9 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Horrible catch rates was the theme for the Vikings' receiving unit in Sunday's NFC North battle for the No. 1 seed in the conference. Hockenson, Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison combined for just six receptions on 23 targets (26 percent catch rate) in quarterback Sam Darnold's worst game of an otherwise impressive season. The 28-year-old Hockenson finishes the regular season with 41 receptions, 455 yards and no touchdowns in an injury-shortened campaign. Minnesota's entire offense will try to get back on track ahead of next Monday's wild-card round matchup against the Rams.

Hockenson finished second among tight ends in targets (129), receptions (86) and receiving yards (914) last year, setting a career high in each category. His role changed drastically after a midseason trade to Minnesota. The 2019 first-round pick had 26 catches for 395 yards and three TDs on 43 targets in seven games for the Lions last year, averaging 6.1 targets per game and scoring about half his fantasy points (8-179-2) in a Week 4 shootout loss to Seattle. Hockenson saw more passes in Minnesota but never had a gain of more than 21 yards, averaging 8.6 targets per game and only 6.0 YPT -- 60 catches for 519 yards and three TDs. Justin Jefferson and first-round pick Jordan Addison figure to be the primary read(s) on most of Minnesota's pass plays, but last season’s usage alongside Jefferson and Adam Thielen (now in Carolina) suggests there will be plenty of targets left over for Hockenson, who is 26 this season.

Return date in sight
Hockenson, recovering from a torn ACL, is likely to return in either Week 8 or Week 9, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It has been most commonly reported that Hockenson and the Vikings were targeting a Week 7 return, following Minnesota's bye. Schefter instead suggests that the team could be more cautious, particularly with the Vikings off to a hot start to the campaign. Hockenson's status Wednesday could provide a clue as to when he'll return to game action, as the Vikings will need to activate him within 21 days of opening his practice window.
