Rest-of-Season Projections
Looking to play in 2018
Barnidge, who sat out the 2017 season after being unsatisfied with the contract offers he received from teams, said Thursday that he hasn't retired from the NFL and intends to play in 2018, Alex Marvez of Sporting News reports.
ANALYSIS
Barnidge was one of the NFL's more productive tight ends during 2015 and 2016, racking up 134 catches for 1,655 yards and 11 touchdowns in 32 games with the Browns despite suspect quarterback play. After being released by the Browns following the 2017 NFL Draft, Barnidge said he drew interest from plenty of suitors, but his status as a 32-year-old tight end without much track record of success prior to 2015 resulted in what he felt were subpar offers. Though he said he's stayed in shape and feels well rested after sitting out 2017, Barnidge seems unlikely to field more favorable offers this offseason now that he's a year older, so he may have to adjust his contract demands if he's serious about continuing his career.

After catching 79 passes for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns in a scintillating campaign for the Browns in 2015, Barnidge came crashing back down to Earth in 2016, catching just 55 passes for 612 yards and two scores across a complete 16-game slate. Quarterback troubles could be to blame for the downturn in production, but Barnidge was dealt a very similar hand the year before and was able to produce at a much more efficient clip. The Browns ultimately elected to upgrade the tight end position in the form of first-round selection David Njoku this offseason and subsequently cut ties with Barnidge shortly after, so the veteran finds himself in search of a job at press time. While he could be a good real-life fit for many teams across the league, Barnidge would likely only be relevant in fantasy leagues if he lands with a team in need of a primary receiving threat at tight end, namely the Bills or Jaguars.
