Dwayne Haskins

Unfortunately for Haskins, his career began with a head coach, Jay Gruden, who reportedly didn't want to draft him and who was on the hot seat and then fired by Week 6. Gruden then was replaced by Bill Callahan, who favored a run-first scheme. And when Haskins finally was named the starter, the team was 1-8. Haskins started his career with four interceptions in his first 22 attempts, but he finished on a positive note - in his last three games, he completed 67.1 percent of his passes with five TDs, one INT and an 8.1 YPA - even though a high ankle sprain ended his season in Week 16. So, there's reason for some optimism heading into this season. But with a new coach in Ron Rivera and new offensive coordinator in Scott Turner, Haskins has to learn a new system for the second year in a row. On top of that, the team's offensive line is mediocre, and outside of his former Ohio State teammate Terry McLaurin, who impressed as a rookie last year, the offense is largely devoid of playmakers. The Washington Football Team also traded for Kyle Allen, who started 12 games for Rivera's Panthers last season, giving Haskins competition for the job. Haskins showed last year he has a strong arm, and he was highly accurate at Ohio State, but he only played one year in college and is still learning the position. Check back next year.

The 15th overall pick in this year's draft, Haskins was unable to topple Case Keenum in a summer battle to get the Week 1 start for the Redskins. While Keenum's experience and poise offer at a certain floor, the 6-3 Haskins offers a much higher ceiling, largely because of his strong arm. Haskins showed excellent accuracy last season at Ohio State, completing 70.0 percent of his throws while leading the nation in passing yards (4,831) and touchdowns (50). The knock is that he's inexperienced with just one year in college as a starter, and also he lacks mobility (5.04 40). But Keenum is no great runner either, and both quarterbacks are in the same boat as far as learning coach Jay Gruden's offense. Haskins likely will play at some point, if only for the Redskins to find out what they have in the rookie. They'll both have to contend with a weak pass-catching group that's trying to get healthy, with Paul Richardson, Trey Quinn and Jordan Reed each coming off season-ending injuries. Josh Doctson is still around and still hasn't done much, but the team did at least use a third-round pick on Haskins' college teammate Terry McLaurin, who has 4.35 speed at 6-0, 208. Considering the lack of weapons, Haskins may spend a lot of time handing off to running backs Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson.
