Cody Latimer

Signed in the offseason, the former second-round pick of the Broncos has been more of a special teams player than pass catcher over his four-year career. Latimer will have a chance to compete with Roger Lewis for the team's No. 3 WR job in camp, though whoever wins it likely will be a distant fifth option in the passing game behind Odell Beckham, Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram and Saquon Barkley. Latimer stands 6-2, 215 and runs a 4.44 40, so the physical skills are there, should he ever get the opportunity.

Latimer has become a special-teams ace for Denver as both a gunner and occasional returner. Not bad, but probably not what the team had in mind when they invested a second-round pick in him in 2014. Latimer was a classic height-weight-speed prospect coming out of Indiana's wide-open attack. He ran a sub 4.4-second 40-yard dash at his pro day while weighing 215 pounds. That athleticism hasn't translated to the field, however, and Latimer has caught just 16 passes in three seasons. He's one of Denver's better special teams players, but after drafting receivers Carlos Henderson and Isaiah McKenzie in April -- both of whom contribute on special teams, can the Broncos afford to keep Latimer at the expense of cutting incumbent reserves Jordan Taylor and Bennie Fowler -- with that duo having shown more potential than Latimer at receiver?

2016 represents a make-or-break season for Latimer, the Broncos' 2014 second-round pick. After recording just two catches in his rookie season, he improved modestly with six catches for 59 yards and his first touchdown in 2015. Latimer followed up with three more catches in the playoffs, so it might be possible that he's just a slow bloomer ready for a breakout year behind Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. The concern is, however, fellow young receiver Bennie Fowler is, too, looking to breakout and has shown far more potential to date.

Latimer had virtually no role as a rookie, but with Wes Welker and Julius Thomas gone, he should get his chance in 2015. At 6-2, 215, and running a 4.39 40 at Indiana's Pro Day in 2014, Latimer has the size and speed to be both a red-zone option and make plays downfield. While Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders are blocking him for now, and tight end Owen Daniels should see his share of red-zone work, Latimer could win the No. 3 WR job out of camp and vie for an increased role as the season goes on. Should anything happen to one of Denver's starters, there's upside with this skill set in a Peyton Manning-helmed offense.

Taken in the second round of the 2014 draft, Latimer profiles as the eventual successor to Eric Decker. In fact, at 6-2, 215 and running a 4.39 40 at Indiana’s Pro Day, Latimer has the size/speed combination to be a faster, more athletic version. For now he slots behind Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker and Emmanuel Sanders, and is recovering from a fractured fifth metatarsal in his foot this offseason. Latimer should be healthy for training camp, but being limited for team OTAs could set him back.
