Sees only 14 targets in 2016
TETampa Bay Buccaneers
January 10, 2017
Myers finished the 2016 season with just seven receptions (14 targets) for 59 yards and a touchdown in 16 games.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end, once thought to be an emerging pass-catching threat after totaling 126 receptions for 1,328 yards and eight touchdowns over the 2012-2013 seasons, has primarily been deployed as a blocker in his three Bucs campaigns. Myers' reception and yardage totals this past season were his lowest outside of his 2009 rookie year in Oakland, although he did record his first touchdown in a Tampa uniform in the opener against the Falcons. Now an unrestricted free agent and 31 years of age, Myers could well have played his last snap with the Bucs. Cameron Brate is the clear-cut offensive weapon at the position. Luke Stocker is younger and a better overall blocker. Undrafted rookie Alan Cross offers a similar skill set. Plus, promising prospect Tevin Westbrook, who's spent the last two years on the practice squad, has been signed to a futures contract and is expected to compete for a roster spot next summer. Myers could latch on a roster in need of some veteran tight end help, or in a less likely scenario, return to the Bucs on a veteran minimum-type deal.

The veteran tight end's reception totals have dropped for three successive seasons, including his two with the Bucs. Myers appears to have peaked in a 79-catch season with the Raiders in 2012, and has served as nothing more than veteran insurance in his pair of campaigns with Tampa. Austin Seferian-Jenkins and the emerging Cameron Brate are superior pass catchers to Myers at this point in his career, and fellow veteran Luke Stocker's stellar blocking appears likely to earn him a roster spot once again. That very well could leave the 30-year-old on the outside looking in by summer's end, due to a diminishing and one-dimensional skill set.
The well-traveled 29-year-old tight end made 22 catches for 190 yards and zero touchdowns in 2014. He is utilized primarily as a blocking tight end and will retain his role as the team hopes Austin Seferian-Jenkins will emerge as its primary pass-catching tight end.
As expected, Myers saw dramatically fewer targets last season with the Giants than the 105 that came his way in 2012 with the Raiders. He signed in March with the Buccaneers but could see his targets decline again. Second-round draft pick Austin Seferian-Jenkins is an athletic receiver and a bigger red-zone target at 6-5 than Myers, who's 6-3. Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said this offseason that blocking is a priority at the position this year, which also favors Seferian-Jenkins, as Myers is not known for his blocking skills. He has good receiving skills, though, catching 70 percent of his targets the last two years.
Myers enjoyed a coming out party in Oakland last season due in large part to his 105 targets, fourth among tight ends. But Myers also displayed good all-around receiving skills, catching more than 75 percent of the passes thrown his way (1st among 50-target TE). Myers, however, elected to leave the Raiders for the Giants, which almost certainly means fewer targets this season as the Giants have considerably better and more established high-volume receivers. The man Myers replaces – Martellus Bennett – had 16 red-zone looks and five scores in New York last year, so consider that a reasonable expectation for their top tight end in 2013 as well.
The departure of Kevin Boss should leave the starting tight end to Myers for the upcoming season. Myers has been utilized as more of a blocker than a receiver during his short career and while he could be the top tight end in Oakland, it’s hard to imagine him becoming fantasy relevant in most formats. That being said, Oakland could play from behind a lot this season and Myers could develop into a target in the red zone.
Myers will be in contention for a reserve tight end role.
Myers should see some action as a blocking tight end in his rookie season with the Raiders.
