The 49ers placed Verrett (shoulder) on their practice squad injured list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
This move was a foregone conclusion, as coach Kyle Shanahan indicated last week that Verrett was set to undergo season-ending rotator cuff surgery. It's another in a long line of injuries for the veteran cornerback, who has played more than one game in a campaign only once since 2016. Verrett ends 2023 having logged just five defensive snaps and recording no stats in his lone contest.

Verrett decided to run it back with the 49ers this year after his incredible comeback in 2020 was derailed, yet again, by another major injury last season. The team announced that the 31-year-old's ACL should be healthy by training camp, but it may benefit both parties if the 2015 Pro-Bowl corner isn't forced into an every-down starting role at this point of his career.
Verrett has revitalized his career in San Francisco after suffering terrible injury luck dating back to his days as a Pro Bowler with the Chargers. The 30-year-old finally was able to stay on the field for 13 games last season, which resulted in a career-high 60 tackles and two interceptions. With Richard Sherman walking via free agency, Verrett steps into a starting corner job while also taking over as the veteran presence in this young secondary.
Verrett joined the 49ers after an Achilles injury forced the Chargers to part ways with their talented corner. The 28-year-old is considered a plus defender in coverage, so he could form quite the tandem with Richard Sherman (who dealt with an Achilles injury of his own two years ago) if both vets can stay on the field.
Verrett has lost a bit of luster after ACL issues limited him to five games overtthe last two seasons, but prior to 2016, the TCU product was considered one of the best young cornerbacks in the league. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old is on track for another lost season after tearing his Achilles during a conditioning test before training camp.
Verrett missed most of the 2016 season after partially tearing his ACL four games into the new campaign. Now healthy, Verrett figures to continue his reign as one of the most unappreciated young cornerbacks in the league. While he'll have to jockey for the No. 1 role with 2016 breakout star Casey Hayward, together the two figure to make up one of the more devastating secondaries in the NFL.
A 2014 first-round pick and one of the league's best young cornerbacks, Verrett led the Chargers in interceptions (three) and passes defended (12) in 2015, when he also racked up 47 tackles. Now that Eric Weddle has moved on, Verrett is expected to take over more of a leadership role in the secondary and is the clear-cut No. 1 starting cornerback on the Chargers.
Verrett is entering his second season with huge expectations. He had 19 tackles and one game-saving interception in the six games he played as a rookie, and he already has a starting spot opposite Brandon Flowers locked up heading into 2015.
Verrett was drafted to be an impact corner and is expected to get a lot of playing time as a rookie, but the signing of Brandon Flowers means that the Chargers have the luxury of developing Verrett slowly if they desire.

Another catastrophic injury
CBSan Francisco 49ers
November 10, 2022
Verrett suffered a torn Achilles in Wednesday's practice, ending his latest comeback attempt, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Perhaps the most snake-bitten player in NFL history when it comes to injuries, Verrett's inconceivable string of misfortune persisted with Wednesday's developments, which occurred with the veteran cornerback on the verge of garnering active status for Sunday night's game against the Chargers after starting the season on the PUP list due a 2021 ACL injury. Had Verrett made it back for that contest, it would have been fitting considering the Bolts were the team that drafted him in the first round back in 2014. Since that point, Verrett has played in just 40 out of a possible 129 regular-season games due to a torn shoulder labrum, a pair of torn ACLs, an ankle injury, and now, two separate Achilles tendon tears.
