Thompson, who spent last season with the Cowboys and Bills, was with the Bears in 2015 when coach Adam Gase was the offensive coordinator. With the Jets, Thompson -- who totaled 17 catches for 161 yards in 13 games in 2018 -- will compete for a depth wideout/return role.
The speedy wide receiver is now on his fourth organization in seven NFL seasons, signing with the Cowboys as a free agent after hauling in a career-high 38 passes for 555 yards during a 2017 campaign split between the Bills and Bears. Thompson is the closest thing to a deep threat on a Dallas depth chart that underwent major changes in the offseason, and if he can establish some chemistry with Dak Prescott during OTAs and training camp, he could see enough targets to repeat last year's performance. Prescott didn't look to stretch the field much in 2017, though, and if the Dallas passing game is once again a conservative complement to its rushing attack, Thompson's main contributions may have to come as a kickoff returner.
The 28-year-old will be in his sixth year in the league, and he's expected to be the Bears primary kick returner. In addition, he could be called upon to play wide receiver, as he caught 22 passes for 249 yards and a pair of touchdowns last year, especially after the season-ending knee injury suffered by Cameron Meredith. However, he'll most likely be a rotational player, and won't likely have enough production to merit a roster spot in fantasy leagues.
In Thompson's four years in the NFL, he's had 17 receptions for 228 yards. In his first season with the Bears last year, he managed two receptions for 81 yards. With such meager production, Thompson is expected to begin 2016 as a backup to Kevin White at outside receiver. Overall, Thompson's biggest value to the team is his ability as a kick returner, with his 29.2 yard average placing him second in the NFL last year among those with at least 10 returns.
Thompson is a young veteran who has had very brief flashes of potential in his four years in the NFL. He is just hoping to latch onto a roster spot and is unlikely to make any kind of an impact on the Bills' offense in 2015.
Thompson is on the roster bubble, and the Ravens have four wide receivers who are seemingly locks to make the team. The former Florida Gator does have experience returning kicks, but the Ravens still have Jacoby Jones as the likely kick and punt returner.
Thompson is a pure burner with 4.3 speed, and he earned a spot on the Baltimore roster as an undrafted free agent in 2012, despite having a relatively quiet career at the University of Florida. He mostly worked as a kick returner and No. 5 receiver as a rookie, but was displaced from his return role once Jacoby Jones emerged as a threat. Following the departure of Anquan Boldin, Thompson has a chance to compete for the No. 3 receiver role, although he could move up as high as No. 2 if the Ravens want Jones to keep most of his focus on special teams. Tandon Doss enters training camp as the favorite to beat out Thompson and a few other young receivers, but Thompson has consistently drawn high praise from both team officials and the Baltimore media, while Doss lacks high-end athleticism and explosiveness. Thompson probably won't be worth drafting in most leagues, but he could make for an interesting late-round flier in deeper formats.
