Chevan Cordeiro

Cordeiro was a standout quarterback for Hawaii, but he has entered new territory with San Jose State and could have a tougher time seeing the field. In his four years with the Rainbow Warriors, Cordeiro was a backup quarterback for two seasons but then emerged as a starter for the next two. In his final season with Hawaii, the senior threw for 2,793 yards, had 195 completions, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Before his decision to transfer, it seemed likely that Nate Lewis would be QB1 in 2022, but Cordeiro makes the quarterback race much more competitive. There is no telling who will get the starting role with the Spartans once the season starts, however, he played with the starters in one of San Jose State’s spring games which is certainly a good sign.

Cordeiro is at the helm of a Hawaii team that churns out top-tier fantasy quarterback candidates and he’s no exception. He ranked 26th nationally in terms of passing yards per game (231.4) and 12th in pass attempts per contest (34.8). Cordeiro’s 14 touchdown passes over nine games don’t shine quite as brightly, but he does return RB Calvin Turner and WR Jared Smart -- his top two pass catchers in 2020. Cordeiro may not crack the QB1 threshold heading into drafts but should land as a serviceable QB2 with plenty of upside given his team context.

Last season, Cole McDonald threw for over 4,000 yards with 33 touchdowns as Hawaii’s starting quarterback. Cordeiro had 907 yards, eight touchdowns, and three picks in spotting McDonald as the primary backup for the Rainbow Warriors. That includes one start, though it was against a pretty easy opponent in San Jose State. McDonald has graduated, which means Cordeiro is in line to be Hawaii’s new starter. In the past, that has traditionally meant the potential for gaudy numbers. However, the team has a new head coach in Todd Graham, and he doesn’t necessarily come from the same school of thought. Could Hawaii’s offense get a little less freewheeling, and what would that mean for Cordeiro’s numbers?
