DraftKings CFL: Week 14 Value Plays

DraftKings CFL: Week 14 Value Plays

This article is part of our DraftKings CFL DFS Picks series.

The CFL is back to a three-game slate in Week 14, squeezing our player pool accordingly and making it especially pertinent to land on sharp plays and remain price-sensitive. There are some intriguing matchups despite the fantasy-friendly Argonauts being off the slate, and a combination of injuries and suspensions continue to open some up some interesting value plays.

With plenty to break down, let's delve into multiple options at each position across the salary spectrum for your Week 14 cash games and GPPs.

DraftKings CFL Plays - Week 14

Quarterback

Mike Reilly, BC vs. OTT ($9,200): It's hard to believe, but Reilly has become virtually fantasy radioactive during his first season back in BC. That's brought his average price down from his Eskimos heyday over the last several seasons, and combined with his Week 14 matchup, the savings make him an intriguing GPP play, specifically. It's not that Reilly has been absolutely terrible this season, but he's more often than not fallen short of the very high bar he'd set in recent years by only eclipsing 20.0 fantasy points on three occasions. However, he'll face a Redblacks squad that's allowed the second-most passing yards per game (308.5), third-most completions (279) and third-highest average yards per pass (8.5). Moreover, Ottawa is tied for the second-highest red-zone success rate (62.0 percent) allowed in the CFL and yields the second-highest passer efficiency rating in both the 0-to-9-yard (101.2) and 10-to-19-yard (101.6) passing windows. That dovetails well with Reilly's 2019 profile, as

That dovetails well with Reilly's 2019 profile, as he owns a solid 78.8 percent completion rate in the former and a respectable 59.7 percent success rate in the latter.

Jonathon Jennings, OTT at BC ($7,600): Jennings came through as a value option in Week 13, compiling 19.48 fantasy points against the Argonauts on the strength of 327 passing yards. His price holds steady for one more week, and on an especially small slate, he's squarely in place once again. The Lions have gotten better statistically against the pass as the season has gone on, but they're still ranked in the bottom half of the CFL with a 71.3 percent completion rate allowed. BC is also surrendering the fourth-highest average yards per pass (8.4), the second-most touchdown passes (19) and the second-highest passer efficiency rating (104.4), buttressing Jennings' case even further. Finally, it's worth noting the elevated 79.0 completion percentage BC allows in the short passing window (targets of up to nine yards) is virtually a perfect match for Jennings' 78.9 percent success rate on passes of that distance, while the CFL-high 10 touchdowns and second-highest 123.9 passer efficiency rating they're surrendering on attempts of over 20 yards opens up the possibility for the quarterback to connect on a big gainer or two.

Running Back

Ka'Deem Carey, CGY vs. HAM ($6,400): Don Jackson was available again in Week 13, but it was Carey who helmed the Stampeders' backfield against the Eskimos for the second straight week. Carey couldn't come close to replicating his spectacular 16-143 line from Week 12, but his Week 14 matchup should give him a chance to bounce back. The Tiger-Cats yield 104.8 rushing yards per game, along with the second-highest average yards per rush (5.4). They've also given up 13 rushing touchdowns and a CFL-high 11 runs of 20 yards or greater, which certainly boosts the chances of a week of spike production for Carey along the lines of his aforementioned Week 13 performance. As a bonus, Carey has also proven capable of remaining involved in the passing game when given the chance this season, as he has three multi-reception tallies in the six games he's seen action in.

Mossis Madu, OTT at BC ($6,200): Madu is set for another start in Week 14 according to Redblacks beat writer reports, making him a rock-solid mid-tier running back play on the small slate. The veteran only logged six carries last week, but he was a workhorse as a receiver with 12 receptions, helping him to 21.4 fantasy points. The Lions have been a bottom-tier defense against the run this season, as they're allowing the third-most rushing yards (107.2) and have given up the third-most rushing touchdowns (14) on the campaign as well. Then, the aforementioned 79.0 percent completion rate BC allows in the short passing window also dovetails well for Madu's prospects, considering that's the depth of target he normally sees coming out of the backfield.

Brandon Rutley, BC vs. OTT ($5,800): Rutley gets a second straight start in place of John White (lower body), yet his price has only risen a modest $200 despite a strong showing in Week 13. Rutley totaled 13.2 fantasy points versus the Alouettes on the strength of 102 total yards (71 rushing, 31 receiving). He'll set for another double-digit carry workload in Week 14 against the Redblacks, which have allowed the most rushing yards per game (117.5) and most rushing touchdowns (19), along with nine runs of over 20 yards. Rutley is also a capable receiver out of the backfield, and he has fresh legs after only 36 carries all season, even when factoring in last week's 15 rushes versus his old Alouettes teammates.

Wide Receiver/Slotback

Bralon Addison, HAM at CGY ($9,400):  Brandon Banks ($10,400) continues to have the most home-run upside of any Ti-Cats receiver, but he'll cost you an extra $1K. Addison offers both savings and a virtually locked-in role himself, and his own price has only risen $400 despite an 11-167-1 line in Week 13. Addison racked up a whopping 45.0 fantasy points in that contest, and he's eclipsed the 20-mark on three other occasions this season as well. The Stampeders are hardly a pushover unit, but the fact is they've yielded 261.4 passing yards per contest, the most completions (287) and the second-highest completion percentage (73.2) in the CFL as well. That latter pair of figures are largely a byproduct of Calgary surrendering the highest completion percentage (85.1) on targets of up to nine yards, which is a good match for Addison's 11.2 yards per grab and 111.6 efficiency rating as a receiver.

Bryan Burnham, BC vs. OTT ($8,700): Burnham stands out for many of the same reasons that his quarterback Reilly is an appealing alternative this week. The veteran receiver hasn't been able to maximize his potential this season due to Reilly's struggles, but he offered a tangible reminder of what he's capable of with last week's 8-129-1 showing against the Alouettes that generated 29.9 fantasy points. Burnham also has another pair of 100-yard games on his ledger from earlier in the season, while the Redblacks have yielded 14 completion of 30 yards or greater. Burnham continues to be one of Reilly's most reliable downfield targets despite the occasional struggles, and he could be a main focus again this week.

Dominique Rhymes, OTT at BC ($6,800): Rhymes continues to enjoy a robust, consistent role in the Redblacks' air attack, irrespective of who's under center. The speedy second-year wideout's latest success was a solid 17.8 fantasy-point showing in Week 13 against the Argonauts, and he's now posted between 73 and 118 receiving yards in each of his last four games. Brad Sinopoli (undisclosed) is already listed as out for Friday's game, which should certainly make more targets available in Ottawa's passing attack. The Lions' various deficiencies against the pass were already detailed in Jennings' entry, and the fact they're also yielding the highest red-zone success rate (22 touchdowns in 31 RZ possessions) brightens the prospects of a receiver in Rhymes that has a pair of touchdown grabs and between six and 13 targets in his last four games.

Jacob Scarfone, OTT at BC ($4,000): The Roughriders' Emmanuel Arceneaux ($4,000) is also an interesting value play at the same price, but Scarfone could also offer a nice return on his minuscule salary in Week 14. As just mentioned in Rhymes' entry, Sinopoli's absence opens up extra targets, and in Scarfone's case, also affords him a starting opportunity as a receiver according to the Redblacks' depth chart. Scarfone is certainly a GPP-only play with only two career receptions to his name, but the fact he'll apparently slot in ahead of the more experienced Nate Behar ($3,800) in Sinopoli's stead gives him the nod as a sneaky punt option this week.

Team Defense

Saskatchewan Rougriders vs. Montreal Alouettes ($4,500): The Roughriders defense is surprisingly the second cheapest of the week, certainly uncommon for a unit that averages a solid 9.5 fantasy points per contest. Some recency effect could certainly be at play, considering Saskatchewan did look atypically inept versus the Blue Bombers in Week 13 and netted zero fantasy points on defense. However, the Riders' defense has been much better at home, averaging 11.0 fantasy points over their six games at Mosaic Stadium so far. Moreover, they trampled the Alouettes for a season-high 23.0 fantasy points in a Week 9 road matchup, racking up two fumble recoveries, two sacks and two defensive touchdowns. Saskatchewan continues to keep the pressure on opposing quarterbacks with the second-most sacks (34) in the CFL, and they've also racked up the third-most points off turnovers (59) in the league. Montreal has done a good job taking care of the ball, but Saskatchewan's ability to consistently get to the quarterback could certainly lead to a couple of Vernon Adams turnovers, especially considering five of his seven interceptions on the season have come on the road.
