Ouch! To say week 10 was a rough one for quarterbacks around the N.F.L. would be an understatement. Matt Schaub may or may not be done for the year, depending on who you listen to. Matt Cassel is done (does it matter?) and both Michael Vick and Ben Roethlisberger are banged up enough to have their fantasy owners concerned.
Since kickoff weekend, several teams have made quarterback changes due to injury, poor performance, or just because, and only nine teams have had their number one quarterback attempt every pass for their team this season (make that eight after the bye when Matt Leinart replaces Schaub).
For teams in need of a replacement, let's take a look at those getting their chance now, or who may still be on the waiver wire:
WORTH CONSIDERING
Matt Leinart, Houston
Assuming Schaub is done for the year, Leinart will take over the offense, starting in Week 12 after Houston's bye week. And what an offense it is! Although Leinart has underachieved in his professional career to date (30 games, 3,893 yards, 14 TDs, 20 INTs), he has enough weapons surrounding him – including the return of Andre Johnson – that he can provide decent fantasy numbers over the next few weeks.
John Skelton, Arizona
Coach Ken Whisenhunt has been non-committal when asked about the possibility of Skelton remaining the starter even when Kevin Kolb returns from his turf toe injury. But coaches are measured in wins and if Skelton gives Arizona the best shot at winning, he will keep Kolb on the sidelines. Skelton is 2-0 since taking over for Kolb, including a 315 yard, three touchdown performance against Philadelphia last week.
Jon Kitna, Dallas
Does anyone believe Tony Romo will remain healthy for the remainder of the season? He played through a fractured rib early on, but has missed three or more games in two of the past three years. If Kitna does take the field, he has the experience to succeed but, at 39 years old, should not be expected to do much. However, with the emergence of Laurent Robinson and DeMarco Murray, the return of Miles Austin and the play of Dez Bryant, Kitna could be a decent emergency replacement.
Others worth consideration include Matt Flynn (only if you own Aaron Rodgers) Tarvaris JacksonRex Grossman.
NOT WORTH CONSIDERING
Tyler Palko & Ricky Stanzi, Kansas City
Palko will be the starting quarterback this week (Monday night against the Patriots), but the team may elect to give Stanzi a look as well. Matt Cassel wasn't lighting up the scoreboard, and the Chiefs face New England, Pittsburgh, Chicago and the Jets in their next four games.
Vince Young & Mike Kafka, Philadelphia
Young was the backup for Michael Vick the last time he missed time, but it's unclear if Philadelphia remains committed to Young over Kafka. Even if Vick plays this week, he is always an injury risk, meaning Young or Kafka may get a shot. Young's style of play is most similar to Vick's, but he has thrown just one pass this season (an interception). Kafka saw his first professional action earlier this season (11-16, 107 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs).
Charlie Batch, Pittsburgh
Ben Roethlisberger is as tough as they come and is not likely to miss any action. But, since he broke the thumb on his throwing hand, Batch may be pressed in to action. When he filled in for Big Ben during his suspension last season he did so quite nicely. But he is 36 years old and, should the Steelers' be forced to use him, it is likely they revert back to their style of power running.
Others not worth consideration include Kyle Orton and Dan Orlovsky.
Did I miss anyone? Disagree with those I listed? Let me know (as if you had to be asked).
