Washington 1 – Seattle 0
W: Tyler Clippard (1-0) L: Chris Ray (3-2)
- If you follow me on twitter (@KCPayne26) you would have seen this soon after the game was over:
Today Tyler Clippard picked up his first win. Last year at this time he was 8-3 with a 1.58 ERA. #Nats #winsarerandom
That being said it was a tremendous pitcher's duel between Jason Marquis and Michael Pineda. Both went unscored upon through a combined 15 innings although neither figured into the decision. Jim Riggleman resigned and I'd love to throw my hat in the ring for his replacement; I have plenty of good ideas considering the crazy upside of the Nationals.
New York 4 – Oakland 1
W: Chris Capuano (6-7) L: Graham Godfrey (1-1) S: Francisco Rodriguez (20)
SB: Jemile Weeks 2 (6) – pronounced je-MILE
CS: Daniel Murphy (3)
- The Athletics ran out an awesome lineup with no one starting outside of Jemile Weeks' small sample size hitting above .274. This is not a typo. If you're in a daily league, look ahead to figure out how you can take advantage of the Oakland lineup.
San Francisco 2 – Minnesota 1
W: Tim Lincecum (6-6) L: Brain Duensing (4-7) S: Brian Wilson (21)
CS: Ben Revere (3)
- Timmeh! - finally seems to be on track this game only allowing a few base runners, a double, two singles and two walks. If you watched this game this was utter dominance as evidenced by the 12 strikeouts.
- Michael Cuddyer was the only hot bat for the Twins, going 3-for-4. Cuddyer is now 24-for-71 (.338) with five home runs, 16 RBI and four steals in June. He is also in the middle of a 12-game hit streak.
Arizona 5 – Kansas City 3
W: Daniel Hudson (9-5) L: Felipe Paulino (0-5) S: J.J. Putz (20)
HR: Miguel Montero (9), Juan Miranda (7)
- While Daniel Hudson gave up three runs, he only allowed six hits (one double, five singles) over seven innings. Felipe Paulino fell victim to the long ball by giving up two homers despite eight Ks and only one walk.
- I rostered Wily Mo Pena in one of my deeper leagues and I'm not too optimistic about his future with the big club. Yes, he hit a home run in his first game with the team but has six strikeouts in 11 big-league at-bats. Look for a DFA when interleague play is over.
St. Louis 12 – Philadelphia 2
W: Chris Carpenter (2-7) L: Roy Oswalt (4-6)
HR: Jon Jay (5), Lance Berkman (18), Carlos Ruiz (3)
SB: Shane Victorino (12)
- Roy Oswalt left the game after only two innings with what was described as tightness in his lower back. This sounds like a DL stint to me and I wouldn't expect to see him on the mound until after the All-Star break.
- An interesting note – the Phillies don't have a .300 hitter in their starting lineup. Not Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco or Ryan Howard.
- Is anyone else wondering what's happened to Ryan Howard? After a big drop-off last year, his numbers look the same this season. From 2006-2009 he posted at least 45 homers and 136 RBI in each season. Last year he had 31 homers and 108 RBI while this season he's on a similar pace with an almost identical OPS from last year (.859 vs. .856).
- From the Madison Bumgarner department: Danys Baez gave up six earned runs over an inning of work for a 54.0 ERA.
