Is it just me, or is their less excitement generally for this Super Bowl than usual? Maybe, the sight of the Pro Bowl last week subtly signaled to me that the season is already over, and I've moved on. But it's also seems like the matchup itself is lacking.
For one, there's no David vs. Goliath narrative, no team like the Giants in 2007 that surprisingly passed each test and was ready for the ultimate one. And even though both teams are No. 1 seeds, it's not the Goliath vs. Goliath matchup (like the Dolphins-Niners in 1984), either. That's because although the Colts could have been undefeated, they had to come from behind late in so many of their games to do it. Seeing what New England and teams like Jacksonville (twice) and San Francisco did against them, it's hard to view them as a truly great team. Moreover, the idea that they'd struggle to be .500 without their best player is also a knock.
The Saints don't impress because they've played one good game since November, a blowout win at home against the Cardinals. Moreover, anyone who watched the NFC Championship game on the Saints home turf knows the Vikings were the better team and essentially handed it to them. When the worse team (at least that day) wins one of the conference title games, it's hard to get excited about them in the Super Bowl.
Finally, look at the supporting players on both teams besides the quarterbacks. Who's the second best Saint? Marques Colston, Darren Sharper, Will Smith, Pierre Thomas? Are you dying to see any of those guys play? What about the next best player on Indy after Manning? Dwight Freeney's hurt, and Reggie Wayne is super solid, but not exactly a draw. For my money Pierre Garcon and Robert Meachem are the guys who provide the excitement, but neither has been a consistent enough part of his team's offense this year.
Don't get me wrong - the game could turn out well - I wasn't excited for last year's, either, and it was a terrific Super Bowl. But this is one of those years where it might have been better if the teams had just one week before the title games and the big one. I'm already looking forward to Spring Training and my baseball drafts.
