In the interest of full disclosure, I hate the Jets and am sick of all the Revis talk. But in this "arena league" environment (as Peter Schoenke put it), who's the true outlier, MVP Peyton Manning or Revis?
My colleague Mike Salfino who's a Jets fan says Manning should be the MVP every year because the Colts wouldn't win seven games without him, but they always win 12-plus with him. But that assumes that Matt Hasselbeck or David Garrard takes Manning's place. What if Philip Rivers, Tony Romo or Brett Favre are on the Colts instead? Maybe Indy wins 11 or 12 this year. There are so many top QBs you can't compare Manning's value to that of a scrub.
Contrast that with Revis. Do the Jets sniff the playoffs if Antoine Winfield or Asante Samuel take his place? Maybe Nnamdi Asomugha would get them to seven wins, Charles Woodson to six (Woodson's a dynamic player but far from a shutdown corner). And these are all Pro Bowlers.
Revis is the outlier this year, not Manning.
(A similar argument can also be made for Chris Johnson, considering the Titans essentially won the same number of games as the Jets - if you count the gift in Indy as a loss). But in this era, it usually makes more sense to give the award to a player that impacts the passing game.
