I just got done updating my Rotowire cheat sheet player rankings, and Ramon Sessions has just made the biggest leap in my ranking history from #140 to #25. I did this immediately after dropping Manu Ginobili in a (very) shallow points based league so that I could pick up Sessions from the free agent wire. So, am I overreacting from his big 44-point/12-assist game on Saturday night? Or is the big jump justified? Let's take a look at my reasoning.
1) Sessions came from the NBDL to the NBA for the last month of last season, and on an injury depleted Bucks team he ended the season by dishing double-digit assists in his last five games (averaging 15 assists over that stretch).
2) Sessions has moved into the starting line-up several times this season at shooting guard in place of an injured Michael Redd. He was averaging 15 points, more than six assists and almost two steals per in that role with several 20-point efforts, showing that he can score.
3) I wrote this blurb Friday afternoon to go in next week's Hoops Lab: "With both Ridenour and Michael Redd injured, the reins for the team pass fully to Ramon Sessions. Sessions produced elite guard numbers during garbage time last season, and the cards seem to be aligning for him to have another chance in similar circumstances this season as well. "
Summary: We knew that as the lead guard in limited chances as a rookie Sessions produced assists at a Chris Paul rate. We knew that as a part-time shooting guard this season Sessions was able to produce Randy Foye numbers. And with the entire Bucks backcourt hurt, we expected Sessions to produce elite numbers. Then, after knowing all of that, Sessions immediately went out and produced a 40/10 double-double in his very first opportunity.
Seems to me that Sessions' ranking hike this week is justified, but by this time next week we should have a better idea. In the meantime, what do you think? Is Sessions a fluke, or has he suddenly become one of the best fantasy-producing guards in the league?
