We're deep into production for this year's Baseball Magazine, and one of the big tasks I've had to do is vet all the players in our database for each team to determine whether they merited inclusion for a season outlook. It's one of the tougher tasks, because while there's a number of players that are at the very least rather interesting, we have to make the cut somewhere for space issues. So, from time to time, I'm going to list the players for a given team that are worth following but for one reason or another didn't make the cut for the magazine. Today, I'll start with the Yankees (and we assign players with the organization where they finished the 2008 season).
Jeremy Bleich - 2008 2nd round draft pick, some command issues and potential arm issues.
Ben Broussard - Could surface somewhere with a team that needs a spare bat off the bench.
J. Brent Cox - Returning from arm surgery, command is still a problem.
Matthew Cusick - Possible second base prospect, acquired from the Astros for LaTroy Hawkins.
Jairo Heredia - Struck out 95 in 102.1 innings as an 18-year old, in Low-A.
George Kontos - Probably the toughest cut - good K-rate at Double-A. Once thought to be part of the Xavier Nady trade.
Zach Kroenke - Just missed the 40-man roster; relief prospect.
Zach McAllister - 2006 3rd round pick, broke through to High-A this year.
Mike Mussina - Retired - is he a Hall of Famer for you? He is for me, and I don't think it's that tough of a call.
Austin Romine - Modest catching prospect in Low-A ball in 2008.
Kevin Whelan - Battled injuries since coming over in the Gary Sheffield trade. His walk rate has been awful since his return.
