Martin agreed to a contract Friday with the D-League's Iowa Energy, international basketball writer David Pick reports.
ANALYSIS
After getting waived by the Pistons in training camp last fall, Martin spent the entire 2015-16 campaign with the Energy, averaging 20.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. The 31-year-old is a veteran of 243 NBA games and could earn a promotion back to the game's highest level later this season when injuries inevitably take their toll on backcourts across the league.

Martin exercised his player option this summer to stay with the Pistons one more season, but it's possible the team could waive him in training camp in order to clear a roster spot for Adonis Thomas or another of their camp invites. Martin will turn 31 years old in November. He played in just 23 games for the Pistons last season, averaging nine minutes per game. Martin was signed to be a long-range threat off the bench, but he ended up hitting a career-low 19 percent of his three-point attempts. He didn't get the job done last season, so it's unlikely Martin will have a meaningful role on the Pistons this season. If he does get minutes, Martin could help in three-pointers, but that's about it.
Martin signed a one-year deal with the Pistons this summer. The 29-year-old wing will be joining his sixth team in seven NBA seasons. He spent the 2013-14 campaign with the Bulls and Hawks, finishing the year with averages of 5.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.4 three-pointers in 15 minutes per game while making 59 appearances. The key skill Cartier has provided to all five of his past NBA employers is the ability to knock down three-pointers. He'll once again be asked to provide a three-point threat off the bench, but with players like D.J. Augustin, Jodie Meeks, Kyle Singler, Caron Butler, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope expected to play larger parts in similar roles for Detroit, it's unlikely Martin will be able to carve out a large enough role to make much of a fantasy impact.
Martin will be fighting for minutes. He came back after playing in China and the D-League last year and actually gave the Wizards valuable minutes in the last month of the season. He posted 9.3 points (on 44.0 percent shooting), 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 treys in 23.0 minutes per game, which will be difficult to match since he's buried on the depth chart.
