Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Josh Okogie was born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1998. The fourth of five children born to Pius and Antonia Okogie, Josh moved with his family to the United States when he was almost three years old. He tried out basketball just for fun at the age of eight and immediately fell in love with the sport. Okogie spent three years starting at Shiloh High School in Snellville, Georgia, leading the Generals to a 28-4 mark and the program's first-ever state semifinal appearance as a junior. As a senior, he was even more prolific, carrying Shiloh to a 24-6 record and the Region 8-AAAAAA championship. He was named the Gwinnett Daily Post's Player of the Year for both of those seasons, all while maintaining an honor-roll-level 3.8 GPA. Okogie carried that academic mindset with him to the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he majored in business administration. He is also a champion of community service, having received a 2018 ACC Top 6 for Service award for his dedication to community service and outreach programs. You can follow Okogie on Twitter @CallMe_NonStop and on Instagram @callme_nonstop. Okogie was named to the 2017-18 All-Atlantic Coast Conference third team in his second college season after being named to the 2016-17 ACC All-Freshman squad. As a sophomore at Georgia Tech, Okogie ranked fourth in the ACC in points (18.2) per game. Besides leading the Yellow Jackets in scoring, he paced the team in steals per game (1.8) as well. He also ranked second on the team in both rebounds (6.3) and assists (2.5) per game. Okogie 16.1 points per game in his first college season ranked third in the ACC among freshmen. Following his sophomore season, Okogie entered the 2018 NBA Draft. He was selected in the first round (20th overall) in the draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Plays well in loss
FPhoenix Suns
November 19, 2024
Okogie notched 11 points (3-5 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 3-4 FT), five rebounds, two assists, one block and two steals across 25 minutes during Monday's 109-99 loss to Orlando.
ANALYSIS
The Suns have dropped four games in a row as they continue to be battered by injuries, mainly to Kevin Durant (calf) and Bradley Beal (calf). Okogie has been a bright spot, however, producing averages of 14.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 three-pointers in that span. He'll continue to be on the streaming radar until the Suns get some reinforcements.

Okogie played a sizeable role for the Suns last season, much to the surprise of just about everybody. On a team that lacked depth, he ended the season by starting the final 25 games. During that span, he was the 158th-ranked player in standard formats, averaging 11.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.7 three-pointers. Given the team has added a lot of rotation pieces this offseason, it could be that those 25 games were a best-case scenario for Okogie. While he likely did enough to be retained in the rotation, he is not a player who needs to be rostered outside of deeper formats.
Okogie has been a defensive specialist in his first three seasons in the NBA, and he has a low usage rate. Last season, he averaged 5.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists, ranking 307th in per-game fantasy production. He has potential to be the Wolves' backup small forward this season, but he has limited upside with Anthony Edwards manning the starting spot. Even if Okogie somehow saw extended run, he likely wouldn't be fantasy-relevant in standard leagues. As a result, he can be ignored in almost all fantasy drafts, and he's not appealing in even deep dynasty formats.
Okogie made incremental improvements as a sophomore. The defensive-minded guard/wing saw 25.0 minutes per game, averaging 8.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.5 combined steals-plus-blocks. Moving forward, the hope should be that Okogie develops into an average offensive player whose fantasy value is buoyed by his steal and block numbers. For example, in the 11 games that he saw 30-plus minutes last season, he averaged 13.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.0 combined steals-plus-blocks. But It's not clear whether he'll be able to garner that type of run regularly in 2020-21, especially if the Timberwolves draft a backcourt player and/or bring Malik Beasley back. Jarrett Culver is also in the fold. For now, Okogie is likely best suited as a deep-league flier in fantasy, who is mainly a dynasty target.
Okogie had a much larger role in his rookie season than anticipated. The Georgia Tech product played in 74 games, starting 52 of them thanks in large part to a litany of injuries that plagued the Timberwolves. Okogie contributed minimally on the offensive end of the floor, putting up 7.7 points, 2.9 points and 1.2 assists in 23.7 minutes per game. Okogie struggled mightily with his shot, shooting just 38.6 percent from the field and 27.9 percent from three, though he is just 20 years old with a lot of room to grow in his second season. He made an impact on defense with 1.2 steals and 0.4 blocks per contest, and his effort on that end of the floor makes him an interesting fantasy prospect heading into 2019-20 if he can improve his shot and maintain a level of consistency on offense. Okogie is a candidate to open the season as the starting small forward, and an uptick in minutes is a strong possibility.
Okogie was taken with the 20th overall pick in the 2018 draft, but it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to crack the rotation for the notoriously veteran-favoring Tom Thibodeau. Chances are, he'll spend much of the year learning behind Jimmy Butler and Jeff Teague, and he could ultimately make much more of an impact in the G League. The Georgia Tech product was one of the more impressive players at the Draft Combine in May, and his combination of strength and athleticism makes him a high-upside player on the defensive end in the long-term. The 6-4 Okogie averaged 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.8 combined steals/blocks as a sophomore last season, and he knocked down 38 percent of his 4.2 three-point attempts per game.

ANALYSIS
The Suns have a well-established core in place and are putting the final touches on their roster, and on that note, Okogie could be a solid piece to come off the bench on a regular basis.
