Sexton's career was trending in the wrong direction after his final year in Cleveland, but something clicked in Utah last season. The former Alabama guard averaged 18.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.6 threes. That's a massive boost from what we saw over the past two years. Sexton averaged 24.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.6 threes in his final year with the Cavs in 2021-22, but his production took a major hit after moving to the Jazz. Sexton's best games came as a starter last year, averaging 21.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.9 threes in his 51 starts. In his 27 games as a reserve player, Sexton averaged 14.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.1 threes per game. He's fortunate that Utah didn't do much in the offseason, with Sexton projected to start ahead of Jordan Clarkson at the shooting guard position. There's not much playmaking on this roster, and the Jazz need Sexton to be one of the team leaders in points, shot attempts and usage. Sexton may be a sneaky pick at the end of drafts. Based on his ADP (105), most fantasy managers aren't expecting much. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Collin Darnell Sexton was born in 1999 in Marietta, Georgia to Darnell and Gia Sexton. He attended Hillgrove High School in Powder Springs, Georgia for his first two years before moving on to Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Georgia. As a junior, Sexton averaged 28.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 steals. In his senior season, he posted 32.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game. As a result, Sexton was named 2017 First-Team All-State and Class 7A Player of the Year. He would also earn McDonald's All-American, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit invitations. Sexton also won MVP while representing the USA at the 2016 FIBA U-17 World Championships in Spain after averaging 17 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists. You can follow him on Twitter (@CollinSexton02). The highlight of Sexton's early college career was one of the strangest games in recent memory. Due to ejections, eliminations due to fouls, and injuries, Alabama had to play for 10 minutes against Minnesota with just three players. Sexton took over with a career-high 40 points and nearly helped the undermanned Crimson Tide to an early-season win. It was a hint of the type of scoring potential the 6-foot-3 guard possessed. Two weeks later, he would put 30 points on Arizona. Sexton caught fire at the end of the season. He scored at least 21 points in five straight games. He helped Alabama beat Texas A&M and Auburn in the SEC Tournament with a combined 58 points before being held to 21 points by Kentucky. Alabama was invited to the NCAA Tournament and beat Virginia Tech in the first round behind 25 points and six assists from Sexton. He averaged 19.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists before declaring for the 2018 NBA Draft, where he was chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the eighth overall pick.
Drops seven dimes in loss

Sexton ended with 14 points (5-12 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds and seven assists in 27 minutes during Thursday's 123-100 loss to Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS Sexton has started three straight games after a brief stint on the bench. Sexton and Jordan Clarkson will likely continue to platoon in the backcourt, and with no clear winner in terms of production, their fantasy efficacy will be somewhat diluted. For now, it appears that Clarkson will remain in his sixth-man role, where he is usually very productive.

Sexton has had an appealing scoring profile in the past, but the arrow is pointing in the wrong direction. After averaging nearly 20 points per game through his first four years, Sexton averaged just 14.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.6 steals in an injury-riddled 2022-23 season. Everyone anticipated that Sexton would be the go-to scorer for the Jazz when they acquired him as part of the Donovan Mitchell trade, but this organization had other ideas. Lauri Markkanen became the focal point of the offense, while Jordan Clarkson and Mike Conley became were entrusted more with the ball. Sexton started just 15 of 48 games last year. One bit of good news is that Mike Conley was moved at last year's trade deadline, which should clear the path for Sexton to regain a starting role. Before getting injured, Sexton averaged 19.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.0 steals across 32 minutes in the four games after that Conley trade. That's obviously a tiny sample size, but that's a potential ceiling for Sexton in this expanded role. The acquisition of John Collins doesn't help either, though, because Sexton was already battling Clarkson, Markkanen, Talen Horton-Tucker and Kelly Olynyk in this packed rotation. All of that has Sexton falling near the end of most drafts, but his value increases in points leagues.
For much of the offseason, Sexton's future with the Cavs appeared to be up in the air, but the team shipped him to Utah as part of a multi-player deal that also includes Lauri Markkanen and 2022 first-round pick Ochai Agbaji, as well as three future first-round picks and two future pick swaps. As part of the transaction, Sexton will sign a four-year, $72 million contract with the Jazz, which is fully guaranteed. Sexton played in only 11 games last season due to a torn meniscus, but he's said to be fully recovered and should be a full go for the start of training camp. In 2020-21, Sexton enjoyed a career year, posting 24.3 points, 4.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.6 threes per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the field. With the Jazz now having moved on from both Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, they appear to be heading into a rebuild. While they'll likely find themselves near the bottom of the Western Conference standings this season, there should be plenty of opportunity for Sexton to flourish. If Utah opts to move on from veterans like Jordan Clarkson and Mike Conley, it would free up even more possessions for Sexton, who could very well end up operating as the team's No. 1 option.
Sexton is coming off a 2020-21 season, his third in the league, in which he continued to improve in most stat categories. His 24.3 points per game were good for 18th in the NBA. He also ranked 17th in field goal attempts -- a number that likely won't climb any higher. Sexton's aggressive style also paid off at the charity stripe, where he shot 81.5 percent and ranked 14th in free throws made. The third-year-guard missed 12 games, but he averaged 35.3 minutes per contest, which ranked 10th in the league. This is a long way of saying that while Sexton had a great third season, there may not be much more room for improvement. Fellow young guard Darius Garland has earned a similarly prominent role in the Cleveland offense. As Garland continues to improve, he will presumably take some playmaking duties from Sexton, who dished an impressive 4.4 dimes per game last season. The addition of No. 3 pick Evan Mobley -- and the absence of Andre Drummond -- hopefully means Cleveland will play a more up-tempo game. The Cavs ranked 25th in total possessions last season. Overall, there's a good chance Sexton can closely replicate last season's production, but fantasy managers probably shouldn't reach to acquire the Alabama product's services.
Sexton is coming off a great second season in the league, in which he improved across the board. The Alabama product averaged 20.8 points on 47.2 percent shooting, 3.1 rebounds 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. On top of that, Sexton was also accurate from beyond the arc, hitting 1.5 three-pointers per game on 38 percent shooting. He closed the season for Cleveland pre-pandemic on a hot streak, posting a career high with 41 points during a shorthanded March loss to the Celtics. The guard has been reliable, failing to miss a single game entering his third season. While the offensive numbers have been strong, it would be ideal to see a little improvement from Sexton in dishing out assists, so that his value stretches beyond points and effective percentages. On paper, Cleveland looks like one of the worst rosters in the league, so Sexton should still get plenty of opportunities as he looks to continue to prove himself as a young emerging player in the league.
The eighth overall pick in the 2018 draft, Sexton drew his first start on the 11th game of the 2018-19 campaign and never looked back. He played in all 82 games, leading the Cavaliers in total points (1,371) while shooting an impressive 40.2 percent from three and 83.9 percent from the charity stripe. Though Sexton showed off his scoring ability, racking up 27 performances with at least 20 points, he was a poor passer for a point guard. He dished five or more assists on only 12 occasions and averaged 2.3 turnovers to his 3.0 assists per game. Defense wasn't Sexton's strong suit, either, as he recorded just 44 steals on the year. Based on his first season, Sexton projects to be a score-first guard, though his 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame isn't made for a shift to shooting guard. Early indications are that Sexton and 6-foot-2, 174-pound rookie Darius Garland will share the backcourt together, so the two may divvy up ballhandling responsibilities. Ultimately, until Sexton develops as a passer and defender, his fantasy value is relatively minimal given his limited contributions outside of scoring.
In just one year of college ball, Sexton was able to generate national attention with his play at Alabama. He started 32-of-33 games despite being a freshman and wound up with averages of 19.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 0.9 steals across 29.9 minutes. He wasn't the most efficient player when considering his position and shot just 44.7 percent from the field, 33.6 percent from beyond the arc and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line. Still, his athleticism, aggressiveness and passion, as well as his impressive ability to create for himself as a scorer, won over the Cavaliers and ultimately earned him a selection with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. His situation with Cleveland should be a positive when considering his Fantasy value. George Hill and Jordan Clarkson currently present some potential roadblocks to playing time, but with superstar LeBron James leaving in free agency, it wouldn't be surprising if the team turned their attention to Sexton and his development. While it may take some to get accustomed to the NBA level and gain the trust with his teammates, look for Sexton to become a relevant Fantasy option as the season progresses. There are some concerns with his size (6-foot-2) and his ability to act as a facilitator rather than just a scorer, but again, the Cavaliers could throw him in the fire early considering his upside. While efficiency issues and turnovers could hurt his value at times, look for Sexton to be an intriguing dynasty draft pick and also a potential high-risk, high-reward type of player in later rounds of other standard drafts.

Role switch-up
GUtah Jazz
October 30, 2024
After starting Utah's first three games, Sexton came off the bench in Tuesday's loss to Sacramento and logged season-low numbers across the board, missing all seven of his shots and finishing with four points, two rebounds and one assist in 18 minutes.
ANALYSIS Jordan Clarkson started in place of Sexton on Tuesday. It's unclear if the two will move into a platoon for stretches of the season, or perhaps Utah is looking to keep Clarkson sporadically mixed in for the sake of his speculative trade value. Sexton averaged 20.4 points and 6.0 assists on 44.5 percent shooting across his final eight starts last season and posted 17.0 points on 56.3 percent shooting through his first three starts this season, so the lineup tweaking is unlikely to be performance-related.
