Through his first two seasons in the league, Abrines has been solid at his role of a floor-spacer off the bench. He’s shot 38.1 and 38.0 percent from deep, respectively, during years 1 and 2 while averaging 3.3 attempts per tilt. From a Fantasy perspective, he doesn't provide much value other than threes in deep formats considering his overall career averages of 5.3 points and 1.4 rebounds across 15.3 minutes. His role isn't expected to change significantly during 2018-19 with the moves Oklahoma City management made. If anything, he could see a smaller workload with Dennis Schroder coming to town and Andre Roberson being healthy.
Abrines had a steady rookie campaign last season while averaging 15.5 minutes per game over 68 appearances. With the addition of Paul George to the lineup, the 24-year-old should have a hard time seeing a bigger workload during his sophomore campaign unless he’s somehow able to show coach Billy Donovan that he’s worthy of minutes over Andre Roberson, although that seems unlikely given that the team just recommitted to Roberson this offseason with a three-year contract. The one area Abrines has a stronghold over Roberson is three-point shooting -- which is coincidentally his biggest redeeming factor for Fantasy value as well -- after averaging 1.4 three-pointers per game at just over a 38-percent clip. If Abrines matures into an above-average wing on offense, Donovan may be willing to overlook his youthful deficiencies on defense for a larger workload than expected this season.
The Thunder picked up Abrines in the second round of the 2013 NBA Draft and have tracked the 23-year-old's development closely while he's played for Spanish club FC Barcelona the last three seasons. While competing against players typically much older than him, Abrines showed steady improvement in each of those seasons, culminating in an average of 9.3 points in 19.2 minutes per game while shooting 41.7 percent from three-point range during Euroleague play in 2015-16. In an effort to add some long-range shooting to the roster for the upcoming season, the Thunder put the full-court press on Abrines to bring him stateside, ultimately inking him to a three-year, $18 million deal. Though Abrines wouldn't appear to have much upside in the defensive categories, there may be an opportunity for him to deliver sound contributions right away for the Thunder in the form of supplemental scoring and three-pointers off the bench. The Thunder added Victor Oladipo this offseason to handle starting shooting guard duties, but the minutes could be wide open at the other wing spot, where none of Andre Roberson, Kyle Singler and Anthony Morrow are entrenched in major roles. Abrines could end up surpassing all of them on the depth chart if his shooting proves to be as good as advertised.
