Larkin, the 18th overall pick of the 2013 draft, turned down a European offer of roughly $6 million over two years to sign a one year, guaranteed offer from Boston worth about $1.5 million. While the money is guaranteed, a roster spot was not, as Larkin at the time became the 16th guaranteed contract for Boston, which can only carry 15 players into the regular season. Of course, that all then changed with the Kyrie Irving trade. The three-for-one deal freed up two roster spots, greatly improving Larkin’s chances of making the squad. It was assumed that Larkin and newly signed German power forward Daniel Theis would battle it out for that last 15th roster spot, but both can breathe a little easier now. Still, the 5’11” Larkin will be facing a steep climb up the depth chart in order to see any playing time. All-Star Kyrie Irving will see the majority of the minutes at point guard, with defensive stalwart and 2015 first round pick Terry Rozier seeing the bulk of the backup minutes behind Irving. Marcus Smart, who averaged 4.6 assists per game last year, will also see time as the primary ball handler. As Larkin sits, he still may pine for the bigger money and minutes of his Spanish Baskonia days.

ANALYSIS
Larkin expressed a desire to return to the NBA amid the pandemic crisis two years ago, but he has since changed his mind. "I grew up in America. I didn't know much about European basketball," he said. "To be here, to see the passion, to be in this atmosphere. To do the things that I've been able to accomplish here. I wouldn't trade this for the world. Even if I could've gone back to the NBA and signed for a max contract, I would much rather choose this. Being able to play in front of these fans, with this passion and experience this in my life. This has been amazing and I'm very happy with everything." Larkin spent the 2021-22 season playing for Anadolu Efes and has won the EuroLeague title in each of the last two campaigns.
