2012
Alexey Shved is entering his third season in the NBA, having played his first two seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves. As a sophomore, he averaged 4.0 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.4 steals, 0.3 blocks, and 0.5 three-pointers made in 11 minutes per game through 63 games played. He shot 32 percent from the field on 3.8 attempts per game, 76 percent from the free-throw line on 1.4 attempts per game, and 29 percent from three-point territory on 1.6 attempts per game. Those numbers represent a significant step backward for Shved, who was much more efficient and more heavily used during his rookie season. Part of his decline was due to the improved health of starter Ricky Rubio, whose absence for 25 games during the 2012-13 season created a window of opportunity for Shved, and the arrivals of Corey Brewer and Kevin Martin before the 2013-14 season, crowding the depth chart. Those changes, however, do nothing to explain Shved's steep downturn in field goal percentage. In Philadelphia now, Shved will be competing against less talented players for the roles of backup point guard and starting shooting guard. Shved is a sort of handyman who lacks any one characteristic skill but also only has one statistical negative – his poor shooting. If he can improve his shooting efficiency and earn a starter's workload, Shved could be a cheap source of assists and steals.
Shved will try to rebound from an uneven rookie season that saw him struggle in the second half of the season. Shved was seen as a strong shooter coming out of Russia who was able to knock down open shots more than creating his own opportunities. That proved true over the season's first two months as he was given more minutes initially than expected due to injuries and he responded by scoring 10.0 points per game with 4.7 assists per game over 28.4 minutes per game along with shooting 37.7 percent from the field and 31.4 from three-point range. However, he seemed to hit the rookie wall and tire in the second half as he shot just 25.8 percent from three-point rage after the first two months and averaged just 6.2 points per game. He'll need to improve his outside shot and bulk up so that he can be an efficient defensive player. Still, there's hope for improvement since he may have had a tough adjustment to playing overseas. And with Minnesota's swingmen playing time in flux, Shved could carve out a role off the bench.
The 6-6 point guard is an intriguing NBA prospect who has played his career in Russia before deciding to move to the NBA last summer. With CSKA Moscow of Russia last season, he averaged 11.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 0.8 steals, and 1.2 three-pointers in 22 minutes per game. The 23-year-old guard capable of playing both positions, but he'll likely play more shooting guard with Minnesota. He's seen as a strong shooter and able to knock down open shots more than creating his own opportunities. His playing time could be limited in his first season, but Ricky Rubio's return from a serious knee injury - along with the injury-prone history of Brandon Roy, Jose Barea and Luke Ridnour - could provide Shved opportunities to find a bigger role.
