A preseason standout for the Mavericks last fall, Jenkins was unable to find a niche off the bench for the team once the regular season began. He averaged 3.3 points in 9.2 minutes per game across his 21 appearances with Dallas, shooting 41.4 percent from the field and hitting 3-of-19 shots from deep. Since the 25-year-old’s best skill is his ability to knock down shots from long range, it’s no surprise that the Mavericks waived him in February when he struggled to do just that. Recognizing an opportunity to buy low on a former first-round pick who had sported a 37.5 percent mark from three-point range prior to 2015-16, the Suns claimed Jenkins off waivers, and he almost immediately turned things around. In his 22 games with the club, Jenkins averaged 5.0 points in 13.0 minutes per game while going 13-of-32 (40.6%) on three-point attempts, including a stretch of nine made treys in a row. Injuries to Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight last season probably opened up more court time than might have otherwise be available to Jenkins during his stint with the Suns, so assuming both stars are back to full health in 2016-17, Jenkins would likely be in line for a reduced role. He’ll need to show consistency with his shooting in his limited opportunities off the bench in order to remain a constant in coach Earl Watson’s rotation.
After playing in 61 games during his rookie season, Jenkins has appeared in just 37 total games over the past two years. Injuries played a large part in the limited action as he needed back surgery to address a reoccurring nerve issue during the 2013-14 season. Improved health didn't guarantee minutes last year as the former first-round pick appeared in just 24 games for the Hawks. He averaged 12 minutes in limited playing time, finishing the year averaging 5.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.5 assists. Jenkins' shot remained sharp as he shot 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc. His ability to hit from outside was a major reason the Mavericks signed him to a three-year, partially-guaranteed contract in the offseason. It seems likely he will be employed as a three-point shooting specialist, but Wesley Matthews' Achilles injury could provide Jenkins with an early-season opportunity to earn a regular spot in the rotation.
The 23rd-overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, John Jenkins has the reputation of an excellent three-point shooter – and a suspect defender, but hrough his first two seasons as a pro, the ex-Vanderbilt Commodore has yet to establish himself as a rotation player in pros. Jenkins made 61 appearances as a rookie and posted averages of 6.1 points and 0.9 made three-pointers in 15 minutes per game. His sophomore numbers were even less impressive – 3.1 points in 12 minutes per game – before a back injury ended his season prematurely. He still hasn't fully recovered. Jenkins played for Atlanta in the Las Vegas Summer League but was limited to under 15 minutes per game. It seems clear that the Hawks don't anticipate Jenkins playing a big role this season, as they acquired free agents Kent Bazemore and Thabo Seflolosha to provide depth on the wing behind Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll.
The sweet-shooting Jenkins earned about 15 minutes of action per game last season. While on the floor, he shot better than 38 percent from beyond the arc, 84 percent from the stripe and made the most of his few opportunities to hoist shots. Primed to fill a much larger role in his second season as a pro, the former first rounder could see a jump to double figures in scoring.
Jenkins has the potential to be a nice offensive player, but isn't likely to see much playing time in his rookie season.
