2012
Motiejunas missed the final 11 games of the season with a back injury, finishing his third NBA season with averages of 12.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks in 29 minutes per game. Motiejunas showed several flashes of excellence in his expanded role, starting 62 games while the Rockets dealt with injuries to Terrence Jones and Dwight Howard. Even after the addition of Josh Smith, Motiejunas' production remained steady. He was especially productive in January, putting up 13.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting better than 56 percent from the field and 44 percent from three. For the season, the versatile Lithuanian posted a career-high three-point percentage (37 percent). He also improved his post-up game, finishing with both hands and shooting 64 percent around the rim. While he won't beat out a healthy Howard for the starting center role, Motiejunas will compete with Jones for the starting power forward designation. Capable of playing both spots, Motiejunas, assuming he's healthy, should see significant minutes on a nightly basis, particularly with Josh Smith now in Los Angeles.
