Landry Fields: (Hip) Out Five Months After Surgery
FFree Agent
Hip
September 3, 2015
Fields underwent surgery on his hip Thursday and is expected to miss roughly five months, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Fields remains unsigned, and this latest news makes it increasingly unlikely that he makes an impact in the NBA this season. The 27-year-old appeared in only 26 games for the Raptors last season and has been on a steady decline since starting 81 games for the Knicks in 2010-11.

After two ineffective, injury-plagued seasons in Toronto, Fields has turned out to be a fairly sizable free-agent bust. The fourth-year forward was on the court for only 30 games last season, averaging a mere 2.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in 11 minutes per game while shooting 40 percent from the floor and 64 percent from the free-throw line. When he's healthy, Fields has a top-shelf basketball IQ and can provide a solid defensive presence on the court while also doing the grunt work that allows his more talented teammates to shine, but the Raptors' depth on the wing is such that it's hard to see Fields seeing any kind of significant role this season, even off the bench. The best case scenario for him in 2014-2015 might be if Toronto general manager Masai Ujiri finds a taker for Fields' expiring contract, and he winds up with a team that can provide him with enough minutes to rehabilitate his value.
Fields came over to the Raptors on a too-large contract as part of Bryan Colangelo's machinations to bring Steve Nash to Canada, but elbow surgery and back woes limited him to 51 mostly ineffective games in his debut season with the Raptors. Now stuck firmly behind Rudy Gay on the depth chart at small forward, Fields will try to earn his money by supplying some hustle and modest production off the bench.
Fields' game seemed to regress a bit last season, and when the Raptors made a big offer to him as a restricted free agent the Knicks had little choice but to let him go. Fields should be a great fit for coach Dwane Casey's system, providing toughness and defensive intensity while finding a steadier role in an offense that isn't focused on standing around and watching Carmelo Anthony. Expect him to bounce back with numbers similar to what he put up as a rookie, and possibly even a bit better.
An unheralded second-round draft pick in 2010, Fields won a starting job in training camp and was twice named Eastern Conference rookie of the month. But he struggled badly in the second half and in the playoffs, due to a combination of the rookie wall, the change in Knick personnel at the trade deadline, and the sheer hell that is chasing Ray Allen through screens. He reportedly spent time this summer bulking up a bit, in the hopes that improved conditioning will help him finish the season strong, and working on his three-pointer, particularly from the corner. Fields is an excellent rebounder from the guard spot, which is helpful as neither Stoudemire or Anthony are particularly strong in that department.
Even 39th overall, Fields was a surprise pick of the Knicks in the 2010 draft, but the Stanford product justified Donnie Walsh’s decision with strong play at the Vegas Summer League. He showed a deft scoring touch and high basketball IQ in Vegas – important commodities when playing in Mike D’Antoni’s system. But the Knicks are very deep at the wing position, and D’Antoni typically plays a short rotation, so don’t expect Fields to have much of a role as a rookie.
