Omri Casspi

Casspi bounced around between three teams last season, but that was largely a result of his status as an impending free agent who was sidelined for a large chunk of the second half with a fractured right thumb. The stretch forward healed up before season’s end and finished the campaign with averages of 5.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 17.9 minutes per game across 36 appearances. It amounted to a disappointing dip in production for Casspi one season after he registered a personal-best 11.8 points per game, but given his standing as a 6-foot-9 player with a 36.7 percent career mark from 3-point range, he faced no shortage of interested suitors in free agency. The ninth-year veteran landed with the Warriors on a one-year, $2.1 million deal, giving the NBA’s most potent outside attack yet another weapon beyond the arc. Casspi will almost certainly have to sacrifice some minutes with Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala and David West locked in as the club’s top four forwards, and he could even be kept out of the rotation entirely depending on the matchup. So long as Casspi is able to stretch opposing forwards to the perimeter and knock down the clean looks he receives when called upon, he’ll have justified the Warriors’ decision to bring him aboard.

Casspi's second stint in Sacramento has gone better than his first one with the Kings, who drafted him in the first round in 2009 before trading him to the Cavaliers in 2011. After a promising 2014-15 campaign with the Kings, Casspi took his game up a notch last season, averaging career highs in points (11.8 per game), rebounds (5.9), three-point makes (1.6) and minutes (27.2) while hitting 48.1 percent of his attempts from the field and 40.9 percent of his tries from downtown. Casspi will never be confused with an elite defender, but he was at least effective on the boards while providing quality minutes at either forward spot. Though the Kings have brought in a new coach in Dave Joerger and bolstered their depth at forward by adding free agents Anthony Tolliver and Matt Barnes and drafting Skal Labissiere in the first round, Casspi remains the team's top three-point shooting big man, a role that should make him one of Joerger's first options off the bench.

Casspi was able to carve out a consistent role as one of the first players off the bench for the Kings in 2014. He averaged 21 minutes, 8.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting 49 percent from the field, 73 percent from the line, and 40 percent from distance. Casspi showed significant improvement in offensive efficiency, setting career highs in all three percentage categories last season. His main strength is his aggressiveness in driving to the basket, as well as playing with a consistently high motor. Casspi's primary weakness has been his inability to shoot off the bounce or with a close defender, and he also shoots a below-average percentage from the line compared to other small forwards. He is one of the more athletic players off the bench that the Kings have and is likely to have a similar role playing behind Rudy Gay this season. Casspi will likely require a significant injury in the starting lineup to become a fantasy factor, but he has demonstrated the work ethic that has gradually improved his box score numbers in each of his six seasons.

After an intriguing rookie season in Sacramento, Casspi's numbers and minutes have dropped every season, and the Kings sent him to Cleveland after only two years. That being said, Casspi is solid, if unspectacular across all categories. He could be able to help fantasy owners a bit in several aspects, but he is unlikely to make much of a dent in any specific category.

Casspi was traded to the Cavaliers from the Kings just before the NBA owners locked out the players this summer, and the Cavs immediately anointed him their starting small forward. It’s in some ways unfair to evaluate Casspi just based on the stats he put up with the Kings, because coach Paul Westphal yanked his small forwards in and out of the starting lineup. Through 27 games as the Kings’ starting small forward last season, Casspi averaged 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.6 three-pointers, 0.8 steals, 0.2 blocks and 1.3 turnovers. He’s fairly limited offensively, as he’s a spot-up shooter and doesn’t do much else. When considering Casspi during your drafts, take him for his ability to hit three-pointers in high volume, a skill he’ll be asked to deploy nightly with the lowly Cavs, and hope he mixes in more defensive stats with an increased role. At the very least, the Cavs don’t have any other legitimate small forwards to contest his claim to the job.

After the Kings selected Casspi with the 23rd-overall pick in the 2009 draft, there were some questions as to whether they would opt to roster the Israeli immediately or, perhaps, allow him to remain overseas to polish his game. As it turns out, Casspi ended up playing a rather integral role for the 2009-10 Kings, averaging 10.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.0 three-pointers while seeing 25 minutes per game. With injuries and Spencer Hawes' ineffectiveness, a starting spot opened for Casspi. Between December 16th and March 5th, Casspi made all of his 31 starts, playing just shy of 31 minutes per contest, with 12.2 points and 1.2 threes. At 22 years old,that might not be Casspi's ceiling, but there's little reason to expect considerable improvement, either.

The Kings selected Casspi with the 23rd overall pick in the 2009 draft and need exactly what he brings to the table: toughness, passion and scrappiness. He needs to become a better shooter though, and it was somewhat surprising he will immediately come to the NBA instead of spending one more year in Israel to polish his offensive game. Casspi is a sleeper in keeper formats, but don't go expecting much in 2009-10.
