Law, a lottery pick back in 2007, was acquired from Atlanta as part of the Jamal Crawford trade. Law has never lived up to his high draft status (11th overall) and will most likely start the season as the #4 point guard on the depth chart behind Monta Ellis, C.J. Watson and Stephen Curry.

The 2007 first round pick saw little action in his rookie season, as he battled ankle and wrist injuries. Law played in 56 games and averaged 15.4 minutes per game. With Bibby, Johnson, Evans, and Ronald Murray, playing time could be at a premium for Law. While Law is still seen as the point guard of the future, the future may not be now.

For the second time in recent memory, the Hawks had a shot at the best point guard in the draft and passed. Last time it was Marvin Williams over Chris Paul… this time, Al Horford over Mike Conley, Jr. But Atlanta didn’t punt on point guards entirely, using another first rounder to select Acie Law. Law made some news for himself as a big-time clutch scorer at Texas A&M, but he’ll be needed to be more of a traditional point guard for Atlanta, and there’s some concern that he doesn’t do any one thing well to emerge as anything better than a rotation player in the NBA. Law will have plenty of competition for the minutes; Speedy Claxton is still around while Tyronn Lue and Anthony Johnson are capable backups.
