Gibson announced Friday that he will retire from professional basketball in favor of pursuing a career as a rapper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibson hasn't played in the NBA since the 2012-13 season and was unlikely to ever return to the league, so Friday's announcement doesn't really qualify as a surprise.

"Boobie" Gibson burst onto the scene back in the day with his three-point shots, but, while he still made 1.6 three-pointers per game last year, he has never turned into anything more than a bench player who gets run when the team needs some scoring. That is not enough to help most fantasy teams.
One of the league’s top three-point specialists, Gibson is coming off a career year. He battled a nagging quad injury last season but still managed to average career-highs of 11.6 points, 3.0 assists and 2.7 rebounds. With Irving’s arrival, Gibson will see his minutes decrease but will also be given more space on the floor. Don’t expect his numbers to go up from last year, but Gibson’s three-point shooting prowess makes him a solid later-round pick in most standard leagues.
Gibson was excellent from beyond the arc again last season, shooting 47.7 percent. Unfortunately, he doesn’t provide much more than that, so his fantasy value is pretty limited.
Gibson will maintain his backup role at point guard - however, the acquisition of Anthony Parker may cut into his minutes a little this season. Gibson should be a decent long-range threat. The question is how many opportunities he will actually get.
Gibson was among the league leaders in 3-point field goal percentage last season. Even though he was hobbled much of the season he scored 10 points a night. Gibson will continue his touch from behind the arc at 44 percent, but it may take him about three weeks into the season coming off of ankle surgery this summer.
The Cavs were still talking about acquiring Mike Bibby in the offseason, so the club is not entirely sold on Gibson as its starting point guard. He’s more of a scorer than a playmaker, but that’s not a problem for a team with LeBron James, who runs the offense once the ball is over half court. His playoff performances means he’ll have a bigger role in the rotation and could be a good provide good value as a scoring guard.
The Cavs' first second-round draft pick out of Texas is a good catch-and-shoot scorer who provides solid defense on the perimeter, but he's still a bit of a project and will only see a handful of minutes off the bench to start out.
