Will Bynum

For the sixth consecutive season, Bynum served as a backup guard for the Pistons in 2013-14. The 31-year-old point guard finished the year with averages of 8.7 points, 3.9 assists, 1.8 rebounds, 0.7 steals, and 0.4 three-pointers while hitting 43 percent of his shots from the floor and 80 percent of his free throws in 19 minutes per game. Bynum appeared in just 56 games, as he dealt with numerous minor injuries, including bone spurs that held him out of the final seven games of the regular season. While Bynum is expected to be healthy for the start of training camp, his role with the Pistons is in doubt. Under the watchful eye of new head coach and president Stan Van Gundy, Detroit has retooled their roster, specifically the bench. D.J. Augustin fits the team's need of three-point shooting and is expected to serve as the backup point guard, pushing Bynum to a third-string role. Bynum always seems to put together a stretch each season where he makes a fantasy impact, but like past years, he'll need a rash of injuries to teammates for the opportunity to arise.

The 30-year-old point guard has established himself as a sparkplug off the Pistons' bench over the past handful of seasons. The 2012-13 campaign was one of Bynum's better overall seasons, as he finished with averages of 9.8 points and 3.6 assists in 18 mpg. While he has shown the ability to post decent numbers when given extra playing time, the vast majority of Bynum's production has been made for a lottery-bound team that was desperate for an offensive boost. This year's Pistons squad is more talented, deeper and should be fairly competitive, which will push Bynum further down the depth chart. He'll find his way into the rotation, but it may be too a lesser extent than what we saw last year.

When healthy, Bynum served as the Pistons backup fourth guard last year, playing behind Knight, Stuckey and Ben Gordon in the rotation. The 29-year-old guard finished with averages of 5.7 points, 1.8 assists and 1.6 rebounds while playing 14 mpg in 36 contests. Bynum is over the various lower-body ailments that plagued him last year, but his spot in the rotation doesn’t leave him room for much upside. The one bright spot for Bynum is the Pistons’ lack of depth at point guard, which could open up a big boost in playing time should someone higher on the depth chart suffer an injury.

The speedy guard provided the Pistons with a spark off the bench last year, averaging 7.9 points and 3.2 assists in just 18 mpg. He’s currently the team’s third point guard, but his value could see a significant boost if Knight struggles to catch on quick.

Bynum proved to be a solid rotation piece last season, averaging 10 points and 4.5 assists in 63 appearances. The speedy guard stepped in as the starting point guard on occasion for the injury-depleted Pistons, but his production jumped minimally – Bymum finished with averages of 10.4 points and 5.4 assists in 20 starts. Unless their hand is forced by injuries again, Detroit will deploy Bynum as a sparkplug off the bench once again, limiting his impact to deeper formats.

Bynum first became known to the fantasy world late last season when he made an impact filling in for an injury-depleted Pistons team. In the final 18 games of the regular season, Bynum averaged 14.2 points and 4.6 assists. He'll serve as the primary backup at point guard from the first tip and provides the type of energetic game that could make him a fantasy asset, even with limited run.

Bynum spent the last two years playing for the highly-touted Maccabi Tel Aviv team in Israel before signing a multi-year deal with Detroit in July. He's expected to be the third point guard, occupying the same role the departing Lindsey Hunter filled for the Pistons the last several years.

An undrafted free agent that management must really think can contribute, as the Celtics signed the former Yellow Jacket to a two-year deal. He did very little to impress over the summer, scoring just 4.2 points, grabbing 2.3 boards and 2.7 assists in 23 minutes per game in the Las Vegas Summer League. His arrival probably means the end of Marcus Banks career in Boston.
