Fernandez was traded to the Mavericks this offseason in a little talked about move on the day of the 2011 NBA Draft. It’s believed he’ll win the shooting guard job for the Mavs during the preseason and enter the year with his first real starting gig. Through nine starts as the Blazers’ starting shooting guard over the course of his first three seasons in the NBA Fernandez averaged 12.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.2 three-pointers, 1.1 steal, and 1.3 turnovers. He has the ability to be a dynamic playmaker, but he was never given the opportunity to fill that role with Brandon Roy ahead of him in Portland. With Jason Kidd and Jason Terry well into their thirties, the Mavs have been searching for younger players to step up and claim larger roles. J.J. Barea filled a big role for them off the bench last season, and Rodrigue Beaubois is still developing into a viable option. Fernandez’s ability to play both wing positions and his length could prompt the Mavs to lean on him heavily in the coming season.
It's a fact: playing time is ultimately the most important element in a player's fantasy production. If Player A is excellent on a per-minute basis, but only plays a quarter per game-well, he's not too valuable. If the same player nets exactly zero minutes per contest-well, he has no value whatsoever. That appears to be the most likely scenario for Fernandez this year, after the Spaniard requested to return to Europe.
Fernandez put together a solid rookie campaign and did not struggle to make the transition over from the Spanish league to the NBA. He remained extremely consistent throughout the season, excelling in his role as the team’s backup shooting guard. He should see around 26-27 minutes of action this season, and his averages should resemble his numbers from last season with small improvements across the board. The problem for Fernandez is that he’s stuck behind Brandon Roy, one of the premier shooting guards in the league. If more minutes opened up (due to a Roy injury), Fernandez could easily have top-75 value. In four starts last season, he averaged 13.5 points, 2.3 treys and 1.3 steals in 33.8 minutes. He will be a safe bet for top-120 value once again, but you should not draft expecting much more than that. Consider his 2008-09 production as a conservative base projection for his averages this season.
The Olympics were a coming-out party for Fernandez. The wiry 6-5 guard showed an explosive offensive skill-set against elite competition while playing for Spain in the 2008 Summer Games. He averaged 13.1 points while going 16-for-40 from beyond the arc. Fernandez will assume the role of a scoring punch off the bench for Portland. Defense will be troublesome for the 23-year-old, but he should provide plenty of value with points and three-pointers.
Fernandez is a highly touted player with a great shooting touch and a quick first step, but like many Europeans, he needs to get stronger and become a better defender. He will make no fantasy impact this year as he'll see limited minutes.
