Foster announced his retirement on Wednesday because of back issues, the Indianapolis Star's Mike Wells reports.
ANALYSIS
Foster only played in 11 games this season, so his absence should not affect the Pacers too much on the court. His veteran leadership could be missed, however.

Foster returns for a 13th season in a Pacer uniform. He’s seen it all in Indiana: from the perennial playoff contenders to the recent stretch of lottery dwellers, and he wanted to come back for the rebirth. Never once did his role or performance waiver over the years. As long as he stays healthy – Foster has been dealing with recurring back problems – he’ll be a capable backup to Roy Hibbert at center. He’s a good defender and a better rebounder, who doesn’t need a ton of minutes to be helpful.
A healthy Foster will have a role on the Pacers. At 33 and coming off a season limited to 16 games because of a back injury, a healthy Foster is also an assumption. He could fit in at power forward or backup center, two positions of need. Pacers coach Jim O’Brien would be pleased with a Foster/Tyler Hansbrough tandem at the four. Whatever Foster can give them, the Pacers will take.
Foster is useful in real life, but as a fantasy player he's the ultimate no-upside guy. He helps you in only one category, rebounding, and his production tailed off even there last season. Foster could see a drop in playing time, either if his chronic back problems flare up or if Roy Hibbert takes the next step in his development.
From a fantasy perspective, Foster does just one thing that can help you – rebound. He's not going to score, block shots, get steals or shoot threes, and his good field-goal percentage doesn't help you because he doesn't shoot frequently enough. Factor in his chronic back problems, and Foster makes a poor fantasy investment.
Foster's playing time under new coach Jim O'Brien could suffer. While nearly every coach could appreciate Foster's ability to defend and rebound, his offensive skills haven't developed. Factor in Foster's lingering back spasms and you have a formula for diminishing fantasy value.
Foster is a very good rebounder – especially on the offensive end where he was second in the NBA with 3.6 per game in 25.1 mpg – but has a limited offensive game. He also has had trouble staying healthy, missing 40 games over the last two seasons because of various injuries, including a recurring back problem. If all you need is a rebounder, Foster is a serviceable option.
Foster will return as the Pacers’ starting center in 2005-06, though he’ll be sharing minutes with Scot Pollard, David Harrison and, sometimes, Jermaine O’Neal. Foster will provide a steady source of rebounds, even in limited minutes. For his career, he’s averaging 6.2 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game, and posted 9.1 rpg in 26.1 mpg in 2004-05.
Foster isn't a big scorer, but he provides help on the boards (7.4 per game) and in field goal percentage (54.4%). He played his best ball during March and April, but was largely invisible during the playoffs. The Pacers intend to use Foster a little more in the offense this season, in part to ease the double-teams that Jermaine O'Neal sees in the post.
Foster is a blue collar player who will pound the boards. He's good for a rebound every three minutes of playing time, and is especially fierce on the offensive boards. The trade of Brad Miller and the coaching change might present Foster more of an opportunity for playing time, as likely starter Scot Pollard won't get as many minutes as Miller did.
