Buckner comes to the Grizzlies after a season of being buried behind young players in Minnesota. He played in just three games after the All-Star Game because of injury and the emergence of the T-Wolves' younger guards. He essentially enters the same situation in Memphis, and probably will not see a lot of time other than in key defensive situations.
Buckner will struggle to shots in the crowded Mavericks backcourt, and is being counted on to contribute nothing more than veteran leadership and solid defense. Only consider Buckner if one of the prime backcourt players becomes injured.
Greg is still an excellent defender and proved he can be productive from the perimenter but he rarely takes the ball to the hole and has a hard time creating his own shot. However, his defensive ability will make it almost impossible for DerMarr Johnson or Julius Hodge to beat him out entirely for the back-up SG role and it’s likely that the Nuggets will once again go with a committee of situational back-ups. If Buckner actually wins the back-up role almost exclusively then you can expect to see similar numbers to what he put up last year, however, we don’t see that happening and with a healthy Lenard on board it’s likely that Buckner’s production will be cut in half to around 10 minutes, 3 points, 1 rebound, and one steal a game.
Buckner will compete for the back-up role at SG behind Voshon Lenard with the outside shot of actually being the starter because of his defensive ability. However, his limitations on offense will eliminate any fantasy value regardless of whether he sees 30 minutes of court time a night or not.
Buckner's a defensive specialist who will fill in at both the two and the three at times. Expect roughly 15 minutes a game and no fantasy stats to speak of.
