Vaughn assumed the backup point guard position last season and is expected to be challenged this season by rookie George Hill. Vaughn was not a great scorer (4.1 ppg) or shooter (42.8 percent) for the Spurs but plays mistake free basketball and had a nearly 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in 15 minutes a night last season.
Vaughn got a lot more playing time near the end of the season, as he became the backup point guard. While he did hit some open shots down the stretch and in the playoffs, Vaughn is not an offensive player. His value is that he makes good decisions with the basketball as evidenced by his over 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Vaughn was brought in primarily as insurance in case Tony Parker got hurt and Beno Udrih could not handle the pressure of major minutes. Vaughn has never been an offensive player as his career average is only 4.8 ppg. However, Vaughn does possess an over 2-to-1 career assist-to-turnover ratio and this is primarily what the Spurs want from him.
Vaughn will play the insurance role on the already deep bench of the New Jersey Nets this season. With fantasy stud Jason Kidd logging the majority of the minutes at point and solid backup Jeff McInnis, who would start on most teams, don't expect many minutes to be left on the board for Vaughn to play.
Vaughn will backup Jason Terry at point guard, and could start if Terry is moved to shooting guard. On a thin Atlanta roster, he could be a sleeper for increased playing time.
