December 17, 2010
Smith was activated for his first game with the Lakers since being traded from the Nets earlier this week, but he failed to see any action.
ANALYSIS
The Lakers weren't going to use him unless they absolutely needed to. Smith is behind Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum in their rotation of bigs.

It’s hard to believe Smith has been meandering around in mediocrity for 15 years now, with New Jersey being Smith’s 11th NBA city. He’s only once played a full NBA season (his rookie year), and averaged a career low 3.0 PPG in 64 games in 2009 with the Hawks. He’ll bring a veteran presence and not much else to the table.
Smith was a nice offseason addition for the Hawks, whose lack of depth was exposed by the Cavs in last year's playoffs. Fantasy-wise, he won't offer much, but his reliable jump shot will force defenses to pay him some attention, creating room for Atlanta's scorers. He'll also provide veteran leadership to a young frontcourt that basically went just three-deep (Horford, Williams, Pachulia) last season.
Smith is one of the few veterans on the roster, but offers only modest numbers, averaging 10.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season. He'll likely be for Oklahoma City what Kurt Thomas was for Seattle last year -- a moderately productive role player who can play power forward and center until he's traded at mid-season. Smith, who will make $4.8 million in the final year of his contract, is not in the team's long-term plans. If he's not traded, expect his minutes to wane after decent playing time early on.
Smith was signed to a two-year deal by Chicago this offseason. He's never really fulfilled the promise that made him the No. 1 overall pick in 1995, but he'll be a veteran presence and start at power forward, at least initially. Given all the other options on Chicago's bench, don't expect this situation to last the year. . Smith will give you modest point and rebound numbers but little else and might see just 20-25 minutes nightly.
Smith, who's recovering from knee surgery, is expected to compete with Reggie Evans for the back-up role behind starting PF Kenyon Martin. If Smith wins the job then he'll have moderate fantasy value in deep leagues because he can also spell Camby at center because the two have such similar games. It's entirely possible that Smith could come close to the 8.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a game he averaged for Milwaukee last season. If he doesn't win the back-up job, he'll have zero fantasy value, and chances are he'll be traded to help the club bolster their thin SG position.
Smith looked like his old self last season and did a great job on the boards. As the Bucks starting forward he should be able to repeat his numbers from last season and is a viable fantasy option.
The Bucks traded for Smith in the offseason and he will get into their rotation at power forward. Smith's skills have been in decline over the last few years and he will be part of a crowded group of forwards.
