Fisher is hanging around the league despite being a defensive liability as a 39-year-old. He can still hit three-pointers, but the rest of his game is limited. Leadership is not a fantasy category.
Fisher's game has always been fine for the Lakers but bad for fantasy. Last year, he averaged 6.8 points per game, his worst scoring average since the 1999-00 season. He also added only 2.7 assists per game last year, not exactly big-time for a starting point guard.
Fisher will likely be the Lakers' starting point guard given his reputation and standing on the team, but Steve Blake will also see his share of the minutes after signing a four-year contract last week. Fisher has not missed a game over the last five seasons, but the Lakers will probably try to keep him fresh considering he will be 36 when the season starts. Despite being a starter, Fisher will play a complimentary role even when he's in the game. He will not be much of a fantasy factor considering the other stars in the Lakers' rotation.
The vast amount of offensive firepower around Fisher makes him a rather undesirable fantasy pick, even though he's the starting point guard on the best team in the league. He averaged just 3.2 assists and less than 10 points a contest last year. He will lose additional time to Farmar this season, as well as some typical PG touches to Bryant and Artest.
Fisher is a high-percentage shooter from both the foul line and three-point arc, and should also get about three assists per game. As far as fantasy point guards go – though he's a starter – Fisher is somewhere near the bottom of the "draftable" list. Farmar and Vujacic are around, and Bryant likes to handle the ball as well.
Fisher will likely begin the season as the Lakers’ starting point guard, but much of the team’s offense runs through Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom. As such, you’ll need to look elsewhere traditional point guard stats. That being said, Fisher’s history with the Lakers and coach Phil Jackson should get him ample playing time, and he’s a reliable three-point shooter. Younger point guards Jordan Farmar and Javaris Crittenton may get some run, but Fisher should retain some fantasy value.
Fisher started 32 games for the Warriors last year, averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game. This year, with Baron Davis healthy (for now) and entrenched as the starting point guard, Fisher will be relegated to back up duty. He can be a decent source for 3's (108 made last year) but won't get the minutes to put up fantasy worthy numbers unless Davis goes down.
How fast did Fisher sign the six-year contract general manager Chris Mullin offered him? Coming off a year where he was marginalized to 7.5 points (35.7% FG) and 2.2 assists in 21.6 minutes per game in Los Angeles, Fisher becomes the man to lead the Warriors’ offense. As the starting point guard with the Lakers, his assist totals suffered mostly because Kobe handled the ball so much. That may also be the case with the Warriors. He’ll share the ball-distributor role with Mike Dunleavy and, to an extent, Speedy Claxton. We’ll have to see how coach Mike Montgomery wants to run the offense.
The Warriors signed Fisher to a six-year contract to become the starting point guard. He won't have Kobe and Shaq with him in Oakland and Fisher's coming off a season where he shot 35.2% from the field and 29.1% from 3, so questions abound. There's a capable backup in Speedy Claxton, so Fisher will be pushed if he doesn't produce right away.
