2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gipson-Long suffered a groin strain at the beginning of spring training and then got Tommy John surgery in April. Then in early July, he needed hip surgery, so seemingly everything that could go Wong, did for the 26-year-old righty. It was the opposite in 2023, when Gipson-Long emerged from obscurity to shine in a brief taste of the big leagues. He posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 26 strikeouts across 20 innings of work in four starts with the big club to close 2023. The success wasn't expected, as he posted just a 5.45 ERA across 34.2 innings with Triple-A Toledo before his promotion, and Gipson-Long didn't have much prospect pedigree. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound hurler leans heavily on his four-seam and two-seam fastballs, which sat in the 92-94 mph range prior to his surgery. He could be ready to for a rehab assignment in the minors early this season before potentially rejoining the big-league rotation in June or July, if all goes well. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Gipson-Long underwent Tommy John surgery in April and then hip surgery in July, both of which he's slowly been working his way back from. The right-hander started four games with Detroit in 2023, producing a 2.70 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 26 strikeouts over 20 innings and he figures to have a role with the Tigers in 2025, once healthy.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gipson-Long only made four starts for the Tigers as a rookie in 2023, though there were signs of optimism during that brief stretch. The righty posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 26 strikeouts across his 20 innings of work. The success wasn't entirely expected, as he posted just a 5.45 ERA across 34.2 innings with Triple-A Toledo before his promotion, and the 25-year-old didn't have the best prospect pedigree. That doesn't matter as much if he keeps pitching well, and Detroit has been short on quality starters in recent years. The Tigers will be welcoming former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize (elbow) back into the mix in 2024, and Kenta Maeda also joined the team via free agency, so there is now more competition for rotation spots. Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning and Reese Olson will likely join Mize and Maeda in the rotation to begin the year, but only Maeda has an extended MLB track record among those players. That could open a door for Gipson-Long to start at some point in 2024, though he'll likely have to settle for a relief role early in the season.
