Lara signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Lara spent all of last season at Double-A Harrisburg with the Nationals organization, slashing .217/.272/.321 through 312 plate appearances. Given his less-than-impressive minor-league resume, the 25-year-old infielder still needs plenty of seasoning before he's ready for the majors. It's safe to assume he'll serve as no more than an organizational-depth piece for the Orioles.

After three minor league seasons, Lara has yet to realize any of the potential that earned him a $3.1 million signing bonus out of the Dominican Republic. In his third season of rookie ball, Lara posted his third straight sub-.620 OPS. He has hit just three home runs and while his bat speed continues to garner praise, he just can't seem to make solid contact on a regular basis just yet. Thankfully, Lara is just 19 years old and still has plenty of time to get things figured out, and his tools are simply too impressive to give up on the dream of a 30-homer threat on the left side of the infield. He still plays shortstop, but will inevitably move off that position, likely to third base, as his 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame continues to fill out. This season will be an important one for Lara to flash some semblance of the intense potential his owners have been dreaming on. He may head back to the Pioneer League, but if he can get into a groove, he could make his full-season league debut with Low-A Wisconsin before season's end.
As a 17-year-old, Lara held his own pretty well despite being one of the younger members in the rookie leagues. Highly touted for his power, he didn't exhibit it all that frequently, as he only hit one home run between both of the Brewers' rookie league affiliates. Lara did show off his speed with five triples and three stolen bases, though he was also caught three times as well. The international prospect is still very young, so the pedestrian numbers in his first professional season shouldn't deter the Brewers from continuing to consider him one of the brightest prospects in their system.
The Brewers had been rumored as suitors for Lara -- one of the top international free agents -- for much of 2014, and they finally got their man when he signed with the team in July for $3.2 million. Lara is just 16 years old, but he possesses plus power potential. He is a shortstop by trade, but may switch positions as he grows. Even if that is necessary, he should still have the power to man a corner infield or outfield spot.
