In his fifth season in the big leagues, Goeddel pitched a career-high 36.2 innings, appearing for both the Mariners and Dodgers before lat and elbow injuries ended his season in August. The reliever's results were good when he was available, as he finished with a 2.95 ERA and a career-best 28.4% strikeout rate. Even with the strikeouts, the estimators were less glowing as his ERA was helped by a .256 BABIP and an 84.5% strand rate. He finished with a 3.90 FIP, a number more in line with a forgettable middle reliever than a late-inning candidate. That said, if Goeddel can keep the gains in his strikeout rate while reducing his walk rate from the 12.9% mark he posted last year to the 9.0% walk rate he posted the season prior, he could be entrusted with close to 50 frames for the first time. First, he needs to prove he's healthy and then he needs to find a team to sign with.
The 29-year-old Goeddel once looked like a promising big-league bullpen arm after submitting a 2.43 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 35 appearances with the Mets in 2015, but most of that optimism has since faded. Elbow issues and a subsequent drop in velocity have rendered Goeddel ineffective when he's been able to take the mound the last two seasons, resulting in him moving frequently between the majors and Triple-A. After inking a minor-league deal with the Rangers in the offseason, Goeddel will receive an audition with the big club in spring training, but it's more likely that he'll open the campaign in a depth role at Triple-A Round Rock. If he can stay healthy, regain velocity and clear up the home-run problem that has plagued him the last couple of seasons, Goeddel will bolster his chances of sticking with the Rangers for an extended period.
Though Goeddel entered spring training with an inside track on winning a bullpen spot, a lat strain delayed his spring debut until the end of March and consequently led to a Triple-A designation to start the year. He ultimately earned a promotion to the majors in June, but the 27-year-old made multiple trips back and forth between the majors and minors over the second half of the season, and he didn't put up overwhelming numbers at either level. Of some concern, particularly at his age and with no apparent explanation, Goeddel's average fastball velocity fell over a full tick to just under 92 mph, but he was still able to miss bats, striking out 36 in 35.2 major league innings. That said, the righty was used mostly in mop-up duty and will have to show continued improvement to work his way into more meaningful situations in 2017.
