2025 Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Phillips, a second-round draft pick by the Mariners in 2020, ended up in Cincinnati as the player to be named later in the 2022 Eugenio Suarez trade. He got a brief look in the majors 2023 but was nowhere to be found at the big-league level last season. The right-hander totally lost his feel for the strike zone in the minors, to the point that the Reds had to hit the reset button and send Phillips to rookie ball to iron things out. He returned to Triple-A Louisville to make a handful of starts at the end of the season and pitched fairly well in September around continued fits of wildness. Until he shows significant improvement with his command and control, Phillips will remain a volatile and untrustworthy option. Read Past Outlooks
Sent to rookie ball
Phillips was assigned to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Phillips has loud stuff, but his control and command have been major weaknesses throughout his career. He gave up 23 earned runs in 10.1 innings over his most three recent starts for Triple-A Louisville, and the assignment to the ACL will presumably allow him to work on his mechanics in a less competitive environment.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
A second-round pick by the Mariners in 2020, Phillips was traded to the Reds in 2022 as part of the Eugenio Suarez deal. Phillips began last season at Double-A Chattanooga, striking out nearly 40 percent of the batters he faced across 14 starts. His strikeouts fell while his walks spiked upon his promotion to Triple-A Louisville, but regardless the organization deemed him worthy of a late-season audition with the big club. The results were poor during his brief time in Cincinnati (6.97 ERA, 1.50 WHIP over 20.2 innings), but he at least showed a respectable strikeout punch around all the walks and homers. While the right-hander has good velocity for a starter and his sweeper showed promise, he will likely need more time in the minors to refine his command and control. Phillips doesn't turn 23 years old until May.
