Young missed most of 2022 and 2023 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. His 93-mph fastball isn't dominating, but it's effective as part of a five-pitch arsenal including a cutter, changeup, curveball and a show-me slider. Individually, none grade as a plus-offering, but Young exhibits solid control and command, so together he punched out 132 with a reasonable 37 walks with just eight homers allowed in 111 innings last season. He started 24 of 27 combined appearances in Double- and Triple-A, though the Orioles restricted his pitch count until August. Young profiles as a back end of the rotation innings eater. The Orioles added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, but that could also facilitate calling him up when a spot starter is needed, or for a longer stretch an injury replacement. The 26-year-old was recently named a candidate to step into Baltimore's rotation down the stretch by GM Mike Elias, but the right-hander's Triple-A schedule didn't line up with Zach Eflin's shoulder injury, which created the opening for Wednesday's contest. Young could still make his MLB debut later in the season, though it may require Eflin to miss more than the 15-day minimum if the Orioles are going to go through the trouble of adding Young to the 40-man roster.
