Wood (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Wood's move to the 60-day disabled list opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for David Fletcher's contract selection. Wood is expected to miss the remainder of the 2018 season and a good chunk of the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May.

In a season with few bright spots for the Reds' bullpen, Wood was a success story. Well, maybe a 3.99 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 70 appearances isn't really success, but given the atrocious performances that Cincinnati got from its other relievers, the 31-year-old really had more success than most, especially for the first four months of the season. Through the end of July, the veteran right-hander possessed a 3.26 ERA and a 9.1 K/9 while giving up just one home run in 49.2 innings pitched. Things went south after that, however, as his ERA over the last two months of the season rose to 5.33 thanks to a walloping 2.7 HR/9 across that span (seven of which came at home). Wood's control was also pretty weak (4.5 BB/9), but given the lack of other viable options in the Reds' bullpen, he seems to be positioned for a position in the middle innings.
Wood was shelved until July recovering from Tommy John surgery after missing the entire 2012 season. He spent most of his time at Triple-A Columbus, where he was able to flash his power arsenal (12.4 K/9) and wobbly command (5.4 BB/9) in 18 appearances. He'll need to harness his command issues to take a step forward, but Wood figures to get a crack at a bullpen spot this spring after the Tribe lost a number of their relievers from a year ago during the offseason.
After going 5-3 with a 3.75 ERA and an 8.0 K/9 over 69.2 innings in 2011, Wood missed the entire 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in early May. The now 27-year-old right-hander had shown solid growth throughout the minors, inducing more groundball outs and improving his strikeout totals, but he still had some issues with walks and overall command. The Indians took a flyer when the Royals deemed him expendable, but he will not be ready for full-time duty until midseason for his new club.
Wood relied less on his fastball in 2011 and more on his slider and the results were noticeably better. He had 62 strikeouts and 32 walks with a 3.75 ERA over 69.2 innings. His 8.01 K/9IP strikeout rate was his highest since his days down at High-A Wilmington in 2008. Likely destined to pitch in middle relief for the Royals, Wood will hold little fantasy value in 2012.
The Royals are high on the 25-year-old even if his 2010 rookie campaign didn't set the world on fire. He was superb at Triple-A last year, but his minor league record isn't nearly as impressive as a whole. He'll likely be used primarily in the sixth and seventh inning this season, with a chance at earning a few saves a long shot.
Wood is a tall, thin right-handed starting pitcher with outstanding velocity. Batters hit .309 against him in Double-A and in the Arizona Fall League, batters hit .345 against his offerings in three starts. His heavy fastball touches 98 mph and sits at 93-94. His curve is a good secondary pitch at 86 and he is working on an improving change-up. Wood projects as a backend starter, but he must learn to repeat his delivery and trust his stuff. Long term, he could be asking for injury trouble with stiff arm action, and right now he isn't missing too many bats. That will have to change for him to have a chance to help the Royals this season as a fifth or emergency starter. The Royals thought enough of Wood's potential to include him on their 40-man roster over the winter.
