Storen was released by the Phillies on Sunday, Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander signed a minor-league deal in January and was pushing for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen before spring training was suspended, but the team won't be including him in its initial 60-man roster pool. Storen hasn't pitched in the majors since 2017 with the Reds and had 10.1 innings at the Double-A level last season.

Storen underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2017 and subsequently missed the entirety of the 2018 season. The 31-year-old resumed throwing off a mound in mid-October and appears on track to be healthy for spring training. The veteran right-hander spent time with Toronto, Seattle and Cincinnati in the 2016 and 2017 seasons, posting a 4.82 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 96:36 K:BB over 106.1 innings. Concerningly, Storen has seen his fastball velocity drop from 94.7 mph in 2015 to 90.8 mph prior to blowing out his arm, with the effects of Tommy John surgery having yet to be seen. A history of success in high-leverage roles is likely to grant Storen some consideration, but at this point he is three years removed from those efforts and appears an unlikely candidate to return to that form reliably post-surgery. If he lands a big-league deal, he seems likely to end up in middle relief.
