Joins up with Minnesota
Speas agreed to a minor-league contract with the Twins on Sunday that includes an invitation to spring training, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander made one big-league appearance in 2024 and had a 12.13 ERA in 32 outings across four organizations at the Triple-A level. Speas will provide the Twins with some organizational bullpen depth and isn't likely to be a factor in the majors.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
With a double-plus fastball and potentially plus slider, Speas' upside is similar to that of the prep arms who came off the board in the first round of the 2016 draft. He fell to Texas with the 63rd pick for a reason, however. His command/control is below average and there will need to be mechanical adjustments if he is to make it as a starting pitcher. The Rangers attempted to change the mechanics of Dillon Tate, whom they selected with the fourth overall pick in 2015, and whether by the fault of the player or team, that experiment was a flop and Tate was traded to the Yankees last summer. Tate was a college arm and went almost 60 picks higher than Speas, so that illustrates the risk involved. In addition to the necessary command gains, he will need to hone a changeup that he did not need to use with any regularity in high school. Still, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound high-end athlete who touches 99 mph is tough to ignore in dynasty leagues.
