Chad Smith

Smith was one of many surprise callups by the Tigers in 2014, as the team tried all possible in-house options to fix their troublesome bullpen. He made 10 relief appearances for the Tigers after his promotion, posting a 5.40 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB ratio in 11.2 innings. During his stops in Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, Smith fared a bit better, finishing his minor league campaign with a 3.25 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 40:11 K:BB ratio in 47 innings. The 25-year-old righty touched 97 mph with his fastball while with the Tigers last season, but the pitch usually settles in around 93-94 mph. He also deploys a high-80s slider that routinely confounded minor league hitters. Smith could likely use some more time in Toledo, but he could surprise and nab a middle-relief job out of spring training with a strong showing.
