Beeler agreed Sunday with the Royals on a minor-league contract, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Beeler hasn't made an appearance in affiliated ball since the 2016 campaign, instead electing to pitch in the independent ranks the past two seasons. His performance with the Atlantic League's Sugar Land Skeeters must have captured the attention of the Royals, who will assign the right-hander to Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Beeler will look to impress in the Texas League with the hope of parlaying the minors stint into an opportunity in the big leagues.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2015
Beeler opened the season on the 15-day DL after experiencing shoulder inflammation during spring training, and his only appearances in 2016 came as a reliever at Triple-A Iowa, where an elbow injury eventually paved the way to a place on the 60-day DL, and subsequently ended his campaign. The Cubs outrighted Beeler off their 40-man roster in November, and it's expected that he'll remain in the organization to compete for a roster spot during spring training. Most likely, he'll be limited to long-relief or spot-start duty if the Cubs retain his services and elect to call upon him at any point in 2017.
Beeler made three spot starts for the Cubs last year, and while he didn't embarrass himself his first time out, he gave up 10 hits and nine runs in his other two starts (3.1 innings). When he wasn't pitching in the bigs, Beeler was toiling away at Triple-A Iowa, starting 21 games and amassing a 4.07 ERA and 83:37 K:BB ratio in 110.2 innings. His numbers were a little better at Iowa in 2014, but there's nothing in his track record that indicates he has much of a major league future. Expect him to spend most of the year in Iowa once again, with his only real shot at an extended stay with Chicago being if there are several injuries to the starting rotation.
Beeler started two games for the Cubs before the All-Star break, going 0-2 with a 3.27 ERA, but the 6:7 K:BB ratio is probably what led to his demotion even in the wake of a trade of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland. Beeler spent the rest of the year with Triple-A Iowa, which is probably where he'll remain in 2015 unless injuries strike the Cubs' rotation again. At 25, the right-hander is not much of a prospect.
